Cobra roll bar safety

I've seen first hand that ERA's roll bars are functional on the 427 body style. Add them to the list.

Even a functional roll bar in a Cobra is lethal. The damage it could do to your head is as bad or worse than pavement. No one ever said a Cobra is safe, and it's probably the worst car to be in a crash in (with the possible exception of a Jeep CJ5). The upside is that it's safer than a motorcycle and most Cobra drivers are on their toes most of the time. The way I see it, I wouldn't want anyone in my passenger seat to ever get hurt by a steel roll bar.

Funny, nobody has discussed the 'street cars'. Zero roll bars.
Do those owners fear impending death? I'd guess none have given it a moments thought.

Roll Bar Basics
Since this thread has seen a number of replies including a nice FEA analysis, I found these Roll Bar basics with clear photos from author Harold Pace for those interested in some basics. In any case the owners and builders here should be informed, if we can help someone builder a safer car as a result of this thread, then mission accomplished, as this is the beauty of this CC site

Once I started tracking my cobra I become most concerned about safety equipment on it. I did some FEA on my roll bar and found that it was very stout but the mounting details were just short of cosmetic. Theoretically the mounts would not even support the weight of the car. I fixed that problem with some welded brackets that make the connection strong and stiff.
A fellow LSC owner has fabricated and installed side bars just inside of the doors. Based on the photos posted on the LSC website it looks like a very nice safety upgrade with few disadvatages ( as long as their is no top of the car).

Original Contemporary roll bar is too short to serve its intended purpose. At the end of the day these really aren't race but street cars to drive and enjoy. Common since should be used in driving and building these cars. All seat belts and roll bar are securely mounted to frame hard points, not fiberglass. Attached are a few photos of my Cobra with belts and head rests modifications designed to protect me in the more likely scenario of being rearended or frontend impact.
