Your fastest high speed pass

Ok, let's hear it. How fast have YOU cranked up your Cobra?
The 'no holds barred' pedal to the metal until the RPMs ran out top speed.

BossCER 09-05-2011 03:44 PM

I'll go out on a limb and bet that very few have held it down until they ran out of rpm's. Me included:eek:

AL427SBF 09-05-2011 03:51 PM

Ok ...
How fast did you go until you ran out of balls lol.

BossCER 09-05-2011 03:54 PM

Limited by the wind at the CA limit of 70mph. LOL

BossCER 09-05-2011 04:11 PM

I've never actually wrung it all the way out, but I'm really curious to know what others have done. Let's start with the OP!

lamaluv 09-05-2011 04:22 PM

140 MPH on straight at closed track with no other traffic. Ran out of balls well before RPM:LOL:

While not in a Cobra, but in the Monza in my avitar, I had a stuck throttle and the parachutes didn't blossam, both happening on the same run at Byron Ill Dragstrip--fortunately there is a long road that continues on down toward the nuclear plant--It clocked 177.77 at 1/4 mile and by the time I got it shut down I believe I was probably near or little over 200mph. anyway pretty fast for a short 97 inch wb car---the wind blew the chrome trim off from around the windshield and a couple other little items ---

Now I want to try 200 in my 93 inch wb everett-morrison!!!!!

bobcowan 09-05-2011 05:25 PM

145mph, 4th gear, 6,400 rpm red line. On the track, of course. I would never drive that fast on a public road.

fordracing65 09-05-2011 05:36 PM

160 mph in 4th gear, was afraid to shift to fifth so I shut it down.

CSX3183 09-05-2011 05:50 PM

Too Fast

Original 427 Cobra, with orignal Smith's guages, tach and speedo jumped all over the place at high speed. Took it up to 165 on my way to the Sebring race in 1980, at least it looked like it hit 165, the whole car was shaking, had the top up, it was something else. I ran out of balls.

After I had my first child, I became responsible, never took it over 145.

Oh yea, after reading all of the other replies, it reminded me of why I ran out of balls, first I thought the top was going to rip off, talk about a balloon effect, that was the only time my head didn't hit the top, (I'm 6-6), the side curtains certainly kept the top from flying off. And the front end getting lose, it really didn't want to go where I was pointing it, very scary. Even though I was a cop, I figured if I got stopped, there was no way I was gonna escape punishment, those Fla. county sherrifs on the west coast don't have a sense of humor.

DougD 09-05-2011 05:58 PM

Not in my Cobra, it's too scary above 120. But My Roush Trak Pak was still pullin' hard at 145 at the end of the front straight at Road America this year.

Wow, who would a thunk ...
-20mph and become a responsible parent ROTF!

209 09-05-2011 06:32 PM

How fast?

Got to 100mph in 4th, didn't have time to look. Wife said 100 with no comment although had stranglehold on right hand so no more shifting!!!! Was passing 4 semis and 3 cars on local 2 lane hiway. Actually 75mph would've sufficed but what the hell! 209

Randy Rosenberg 09-05-2011 06:48 PM

Guess I'm just a slow poke... 140MPH multiple times down the front straight at Thunderhill.

Tommy 09-05-2011 08:36 PM

140 on the speedo on the front straight at Roebling Road. I'm guessing it could have reached 150 if the straight were a lot longer, but the "thrust required" was rapidly approaching the "thrust available" at 140.

Tim Brewer 09-05-2011 09:48 PM

With a 4 speed close ratio toploader and a 3:73 rear end, I'm topped out at around 135 running out of RPMs.

CobraV8 09-06-2011 03:37 AM

155mph with Toploader and 3.55 gears, 6500rpm redline. However I don't feel the urge to do this very often, the experience is like it was described here already ;)

Good replies, so ~150mph give or take is about
where gonads, gears or road come into play.

Question for RET_COP, what was the most extreme speeding
ticket you issued (or know was issued) by one of your "co-workers" lol.
I'm sure a 'cuff 'em on the spot' affair and haul his ass downtown.

mdross1 09-06-2011 06:02 AM

Once my car was dailed in and that very urge was nagging away at me,I called a long time Cobra racer he said never take the car over 140mph.After thinking about it and remembering how the windshield is mounted and the brass that surrounds it,was enough to limit my top end blasts to no more than 130.Since then have geared the car to get there as fast as possible.3:73 rear,Tremec TKO with 3.27 first.Could not be happier!!
