Laguna Seca Willow Springs Buttonwillow Thunderhill Best--gotta be Laguna Seca |
Streets of Willow................ practice.
California Speedway (road course) ................... decent turns, but a 14-degree bank and a good, long straight. Sears Point ................. I am HOOKED! Hope to visit quite a few more in the years ahead, especially Thunderhill and Laguna Seca. I believe I have found my new hobby and it is quite more stimulating than golf. Regards, John |
Only NorCal tracks...
Sear's Point T-Hill Laguna Seca Fav = T-Hill. It's got a front straightway where I can get up to about 135-140!!! Have Fun, Randy R... |
Tracks, etc.
Summit Point
Summit Point Jefferson Circuit Carolina Motorsports Park (Kershaw) Lime Rock VIR Full Course VIR North Course Nazareth Charlotte/Lowes Motorspeedway Sears Point and the favorite? Drum roll, please...... Paul Newman said it best when he said, "If there's a heaven on earth, it's VIR." Virginia International Raceway isn't as impressive as a NASCAR facility, but it's stunning location, rich history, and fiendishly fun track make this the runaway favorite for most who drive it. It has hard parts, it has easy parts. It has what some consider to be road racing's fastest straightaway where some cars can get to nearly 200 mph and it has the famed oak tree that forces you to almost stop. From Carroll Shelby in 1957: "One lap here is like 100 at Watkins Glen." Let me put it this way: my Viper caught on fire the first time I drove VIR, and it's still my favorite track! As for least favorite track, hands down it is Kershaw. |

Watkins Glen International - Long Course
Pocono Raceway South Summit Point Raceway - Long VIR South The Glen is my favorite by far and what we Crankoids consider our 'home track'. But I do have to say that VIR is really growing on me...now that I understand how to attack the 'Oak Tree' turn. |
Hi folks,
Just what I can remember. Getting old you know and the brain cells seem to leave out certain things. Hill climbs. Ran the whole PHA series. Hershey Giants Despair, etc. Won championship, I have a nice little trophy to justify the money spent. FIA EUROPEAN HILL-CLIMB CHAMPIONSHIP Did not do well but had a great time and completely ran out of money. Came home with tail between legs. Hillclimbs were the most fun of anything I ever did in racing. Other road course stuff. (Note: most all in minor formulas, FF and F2. I never was good enough (Or had enough money) to get into the really serious stuff UK: Brands Hatch Silverstone Goodwood Oulton Park Donington park Snetteton Aintree Europe: Zandvoort Spa Francorchamps Zolder Paul Ricard Hockenhiem US/Canada: Glen VIR Summit Point Marlboro Road Atlanta Elkhart Mid America raceway IRP Brainerd Blackhawk farms Daytona Monte Treblant Three Rivers (Trois riveres [SP]) Riverside Lime rock Sears Point Willow Springs (Testing only) Stuttgart Arkansas Mid Ohio Nelson Ledges Waterford Hills Mosport Laguna Seca Hallet Bridgehampton Cumberland Charlotte Motor Speedway Holtville Las Vegas Motor Speedway (Saac event) Well that's all that I can remember after a couple of adult beverages. The best in the US is VIR. The best in the UK was Aintree the best in Europe was Spa. the best hillclimb is the US was Hershey. The best European Hill climb was in Germany and I cannot remember the name. |
In no particular order
Thunderhill California Speedway road course Sears Point (now Infineon raceway) All are different, all are great but I probably enjoy Sears Point, the most technical and slowest of the three, the most. Cheers, Pete |
Richard
OK--now say them backwards real fast. Holy sh!t Batman! I laughed at Holtville. I lived down there in the early 80s--not racing (or pretending to) then--San Diego SCCA Region still does autocrosses down there--many folks don't even know about it. ;) |

REAL TRACK GUYS

ERA 535,
I agree with you about Stuttgart, Arkansas. I ripped the front bottom monocoque skin off of my March 722 there in a SCCA Regional. What a ***** to repair at the track. Had to run almost 3.5 inches ride height to keep from bottoming out. (Normal was 1.5,) One that I forgot: Savannah. I do not think this one is still in use. I have to give it the worst rating. This is due to the track surface being a mix of tar and oyster shell. 11 laps in the 722 on a new set of Goodyears. Cord showing. It was too expensive for me to run there. The Goodyear truck ran out of FA and FF slicks on Saturday. Jamo, I remember Holtville quite well. The problem was dodging cones and hay bales. The track configuration changed every lap. |
I forgot about Gaum and Saipan! They use crushed coral as the base ingredient for asphalt there. The roads are VERY VERY slippery when it rains (and it rains a lot), there OK when dry.
There both have nice long go kart tracks and you can rent some pretty serious karts there. On a wet track it's a blast! They actually switch to RAIN TIRES for the karts. Talk about DRIFTING! Love to get sideways. Ernie |

Richard-
I was surprised to see someone else had actually run at Stuttgart - when were you there ? I ran there in 77 at the combined Regional/National in April (I think) I was running a Lola 342FF and was lucky enough to win the combined Formula race (regional) overall! They had everything (FF,FC,FSV,FA. and F5000) but FV in one race. Surprised the heck out of me! I suspect that a lot of the guys were using the Regional as a test session. I learned at Blackhawk and RA - those places will always be dear to me for that reason. What makes the hill climbs the most fun? The "penalty" factor of contending with a drop off?:) You have an impressive list! Pat |
