Aluminum racing jack
Guys,
Harbor freight has a real nice all aluminim racing jack for $199.00
I bought one after looking over the one that Joe R. had at Pocono.
Made in China but for the money you can't beat it. I would not use it as an all around shop jack but for the track it is perfect for tire changes and it only weighs 37 lbs.

Great jack, have one.
A mod I made lets the handle go lower to get under the car and still pump.
I removed the roller that pushes the piston and replaced it with a smaller roller.

I purchased one of these jacks and I really like it. The instructions said nothing about this but when your jack arrives there is a plug that has a ball bearing "check valve" in it included in a plastic bag. You are supposed to replace the solid plug sealing the fluid reservoir with the plug having the check valve. Funny how much better the jack worked after replacing that plug. Also, the fluid reservoir was nowhere near topped off so that had to be done as well. Again, the instructions never mentioned that.
Hey, ls1ac, where did you get the replacement smaller roller? What you did sounds like a good mod.

I would only use the aluminum jobber when weight is a concern. If you are in a pit stop during a race and the jack man has to run around to do both sides of the car for example. Or if you're chase car with all the tools is getting pretty heavy in the trunk. For around the shop use, ou need to spend $300 just to get a decent steel floor jack, that goes low enough to fit under these cars, and has a good enough valve so you can lower the car slowly and controlled instead of the "on-off" valving of some of those cheap jacks.

The only problem is that everyone wants to borrow it at the track because it is so light.
BTW If you have not seen this jack, the quality will surprise you.

Cranky - two questions....
1) Does one need to possess a "Competition license" to purchase a "race jack"?
2) Is it available in a POLISHED finish for Waxers?
....just bustin' yur chops.....

Thanks for sharing the economical aluminum floor jack source with everyone. I couldn't justify purchasing a race jack at the usual cost, even though I wanted one really badly. My wife will be getting me one!
I have been to the eBay auction site looking at these type jacks, and my word of caution is BEWARE! Most of the jacks listed appear to be U.S. General brand jacks purchased from Harbor Freight and relisted at a marked up price. The shipping charged varies from $25-$58. Harbor Freight charges $5.95 shipping.

I bought the Harbor Freight jack in early October and I love it! As SuperHeart warned, the oil reservoir was low and performance is greatly improved when one adds some hydraulic oil! Well worth the money...and yeah, I brought mine to the track 2 weeks ago and people do love to use it! Then again, I'm glad to share since folks have been so generous with me.

Just got back from SEMA, I used a long nut. Drilled the center to shaft size. Started with two nut for a test fit.

met the mfr of the jack from china at the AAPEX show (sister show to SEMA). very nice people and seemed to be very reasonable product for the price. do you guys find any play in the handle? any slippage?

The handle was held in by a knob on top of the frame. It was up a little high and could hit a low car, so I replaced it with a bolt. The end of the bolt was turnned down to let the handle turn for release.
The lift on this jack is also high enough so it can be used on the trailer for hiway problems. (One axel, one side)
The handle is two parts. The top half comes off by a push button. Makes packing easy and have used the handle end as a pry tool and as an extension for a lug wrench.

Just got my Harbor Freight jack in this morning. It's really quite a piece of workmanship. Those Chinese slaves really know how to put out a good product. I guess if they screw up they go to the wall!
Anyway, it fits right under the sidepipes. Six pumps and its up!
So what do I use to polish it??

Nobody around here uses wax . Go to the All Waxing forum, I am sure you will get good advice there.

Harbor freight
Has anyone had any problems w/the al. jacks from HF? They look real nice but only come w/a 30 day warr. The welds and every thing look nice but the seals? Would appreciate any advice.
