Options
This has been discussed in other threads from time to time, but it never hurts to throw a reminder around. For those of you interested in real racing there are any number of modestly priced options to consider.
For the roundy round types there is Legends Series, and competetive Legend cars can be had for $6-$7K. The series is gaining popularity every year and there is hardly a dirt or asphalt short track around the Midwest that doesn't offer regular activities.
For "real" racers that care to turn left AND right, shift, brake and dodge; there is SCCA, NASA and MidWest Council and there is any number of classes that provide low cost racing. In the IT (Improved Touring) classes, ITC & ITB sedans can be had for $5K-$10K. For even more fun, larger fields, and closer racing; there is Spec Miata where cars can be bought or built for under $10K. Open wheel classes include Formula Continental and Formula Ford where complete cars can be bought or built for under $10K.
Not sure?? Any of these classes can be entered by renting a car for a Double Regional and raced one or both days for a modest sum, usually around $800 for a day, $1300 for both days. Of course if you break it, you buy it. Liscensure is required, of course, but obtaining a liscense in itself isn't difficult nor terribly expensive and these prices are fairly current, having been gleaned from a single issue of Sports Car Magazine.
It's just a thought for those wanting to scratch that itch and much preferable to driving at speed with an unsafe car of value with other drivers of questionable ability in equally unsafe cars, at a venue with inadequate emergency support.
