				 Rock damage/ wheele wells
What have you used to protect you wheel wells from rock damage?I have coated the insides with under coating but can see where a stone hit the inside of the well an seeing it in the paint...Thought about closed cell foam or even some dynamat....
 Jon

Where do you need the protection? In my ERA, which I'm assembling, there is an additional layer of fiberglass matting, called CoreMat, on the top/inside of each fender, in the well. I had it painted black. For now, I've chosen not to do anything on the bare aluminum panels that separate the wheel wells and engine bay and trunk. For these vertical panels, I'm told I don't need anything extra, and I like the look of the aluminum. If you need the protection on the top, you can add something like CoreMat or use a brush-on or spray-on undercoating from 3M or Eastwood. |

 Hi Jon,
Here is a link to ERA's website showing a photo and description of the Coremat Lippy mentioned.
Assembly jig
On the finished body, it is glassed in. Looking up in the fender well, you can see the outline of it as it is a bit thicker than the surrounding areas. It might be a bigger project than you intended on to glass it in but it would absolutely stop any body damage.

Regards,

Kevin

Kevin thanks, I used closed cell foam inside the wheel wells ...the rear tires throw stones and they can hit the underneath side of the wheel well which could put a star like crack in your paint! The foam will soften the strike of a road stone....Jon

				 Inside fender protection
Mike McClusky made some aluminum panels for the front and rear fenders to act as a liner to protect from rock chips. They are contoured to fit and have about a 1/4" gap between actual fender and shield. I used some small screws at each end and silicone sealer to attach them. They have actually worked better than other things I have tried, rubber liner and under coating. |
