Insulating firewall/footbox
Hello all,
I would be very interested in how people insulated thier firewalls and footboxes. What did you use for material, and what you used to fasten it to the fiberglass. Thanks in advance to all who respond. Jer |
Jer,
I used thin aluminized fireproof material on the firewall and then a layer of the aluminzed carpet padding. On the rest of the interior I used peel and stick Dynamat and covered this with the aluminized carpet padding. Used 3M spray glue for the whole thing where peel and stick was not used. In the pic below you can barely see some of the insulation on the passenger sidewall in front of the door. http://www.priveye.com/cobra/SEATS2.JPG |
1/2" jute felt ( spelling? ).

Thanks Roscoe and trularin;
Roscoe I owe you a beer if I ever meet you at a ralley or show, thanks again for the great picture it really helps a neophyte like me out. Jer :D |
Jerry: I used the same stuff as Roscoe. It is a bit difficult to cut. I stayed away from putting it on the floor where the seats go just to keep the height down. I did the entire transmission tunnel, foot boxes and where ever else I could put the stuff to keep heat from getting into the interior area. There still is some heat getting in around the pedals and a few other places. Use the Scotch 77 spray adhesive for the insulation and the carpeting.
Have fun. Jim |
Jim,
thanks for the tips, hvae you (or anyone else) tried insulation on the inside of engine compartment? I like to keep my feet cool:D Jer |
Jer,
I used it under the seats but bolted the seats directly to the floor with no tracks. Using the Cobra Classic seats I have no problems with height. Also, with the insulation I installed I get absolutely no heat coming through the firewall. If you do it right you should not have to use any stuff in the engine compartment. Roscoe,
thanks again for the tips, seats look great! Jer |

Jerry,
Thanks for your reply, appreciate help from someone who builds cars. Jer |
I used Kool Mat. A 5 foot long by 30 inches wide piece was $150, but this material is very thin and can be used under the seats. I glued in place with silicon adhesive. It supposedly withstands temps to 2,500 degs. I didn't use the jute stuff but installed the carpet right on top of the Kool Mat.

Thanks Art,
Do you remember where you purchased the Kool mat/ Jer |
Another alternative:
Frost King Duct Insulation, self adhesive Foil and Foam, Each roll is 12" wide, 1/8" thick and 15' long, SKU FV 516. Mentioned in the Corvette Forum for both heat and sound insulation. Available at Home Depot and Lowe's. www.frostking.com |
Don,
thanks for the tip, did you insulate the inside of the footbox & firewall, or the engine compartment? Jer |
Jerry
The Dynamat Roscoe refered to is very thin and can be used under the seats. I lined everything in passenger compartment. Its very easy to use. Cut it with a box knife, peal off the liner and stick iti in place. THen glue the carpet to it with super trim adhesive. There was a recent thread I responded to with the part #'s from Summit. Might want to do a search. Here are two pics in my gallery that show the installation. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/s...cat=500&page=1 http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/s...cat=500&page=2 Brad W. |
Jerry, I have not installed the Frost King Duct insulation, However, the reported results were favorable on the Corvette forum regarding insulating the entire transmission tunnel and shifter area, both for heat and noise.
Another use mentioned as a succesfull installation was was the entire rear compartment to reduce the road noise and sound level, especially after installation of an exhaust system. |
Brad,
Excellent pics! Thanks....nice color also, mines a candy apple red. Jer |
Jerry, check my gallery for frostking insulation installation. We had the car on the road without it, made a big change in my opinion. The aluminum tape you see on the seems is less visible in person. The headers are less than 1/2" away with no visible problems yet.Only have 100 mile on car while we finish exterior.
