Passenger door will not open on my Backdraft
I have a Backdraft and the wife and I went for are first ride and now we can't open the passenger side door. It will not release when you push the handle down any tips on how to open the door so I can replace the latch.

Are you sure the latch is broken and that the door is not just sticking/binding?
Try to hold the latch down and give the door a good smack on the inside and maybe it will un-bind. Otherwise, if it is like my FFR maybe you can remove the 2 screws that hold the cover on the latch and use a screw driver to pry the latch back. |
Those door latches are subject to binding. I made a 1/4" aluminum backing plate to go behind mine to prevent the binding. Sometimes when the body works on the frame, the door opening can shift a bit. Try what Dan described. When you get it open, remove the cover screws and shoot some wd40 into the latch. That should provide enough lube to make it work.

Sit in driver's seat, turn your butt 90 degrees with legs over tunnel, draw right leg back, apply swift kick to latch, while someone uses string to pull latch open. Oughter work.

No, it's the latch for sure. When you pull the handle down it will not release from the striker nob..

why are there 2 threads on this? you guys with none-BDR cars- your latches are nothing like the BDR P.O.S. latches.

If it the english type of latch and the lever is moving freely it is broken. It can be fixed for about $1.75. I have the fix link at home and can post it tonight.

Motorhead, What is the difference? I noticed the "push down" note above and there is no "push down on my door handle. I thought he was just turning a phrase.

Dan: the original cobras, my kirkham, and many other replicas use a latch made in england by whom ,I don't know, but the striker piece has "Silent Travel" embossed on it. It has a cover held on by two screws that, when removed, exposes the inner workings, and would be very easy to un-jam. This latch was very common on early british cars, I remember them on my MG T series, and many others.
BDR, on the other hand, uses a latch from God only knows what ( I've been told a commercial freezer door) and modifies them to fit. They are a riveted together design not meant to be repaired. The shiny "cover" is glued over the ugly mess to dress it up. Removing it gains you nothing. I'm going to our shop tomorrow to see if I can figure out how to open this thing and get some photos, but i'll be posting on the other thread. (or whichever one is left) Ted |
I would like to thank everyone for there input I fixed the door latch, one of the shims were cracked and it was not allowing the spring to move inside the latch. So I put a bigger washer inside the latch to tighten the slack up and now she works better then before. Thanks
