Fuel injection ???
I have just about had it with Holley carbs and there problems.
I am thinking about going to a fuel injection system and need advise on the best direction to go. I want it to be low maintenance and user friendly. What would you all suggest? Thanks Dan |
All efi systems will fill your needs. Many brands to choose from but it will take alot of work to change. I just did the reverse (EFI to Carb) and I will never go back. I will be selling my left over parts. Edlebrock Victor Jr. upper and lower induction system. Fuel rails w/regulator, etc. Good luck.

Fuel injection..... Give me your car and go but a Honda. :):)

Hey Mike, why will you never go back to EFI ?
I assume you had problems ? Who's system did you have ? |
A carb is the way to go for original looks. Fuel injection is the way to go for a driver. There's a rerason that you can't buy a car with a carb anymore. Even Harley's have EFI now.
For a fairly easy and (relativly) inexpensive swap take a look at the Powerjection III by Retrotek. It's almost as easy as swapping carbs. Almost. If I was building a mild engine like yours, I'd be installing one. http://www.retrotekspeed.com/products/powerjection-iii/ |
cheapest and simplest would be the powerjection III i've had up for sale for awhile. used it for about 15 min. and took it off. all like new.:3DSMILE:

Fuel injection systems can be frought with their own problems. To compensate for high performance camshafts they need to be tuner friendly which some of them are not.
The same problem you have can transfer over to the FI systems such as lower vacuum from rowdy camshafts. This is where tuneability comes in and that usually means finding a good tuner with a dyno. That translates into a lot of money and $$$$. Re-education in your "system" would also be helpfull. It can be done, but it can be frustrating. Just be prepared to spend the time and money. |
funner2...
Just a carb guy. Dan, if you need to, we can swap carbs to see if your problem is carb related. Mike |
Thanks Mike but this is my second card with a different set of problems.
Now when I push my clutch in or put it in neutral at speed it wants to die. I still have a crazy high/low idle but I am close to getting the idle to work. I read that I may need a lower power valve to prevent it from wanting to die when I go into neutral. I will give that a try today most likely. Dan |
Bruce,
Can you recomened a good dyno tuner that knows Holley carbs? |

I think the TWM system is quite good, looks good, but expensive.
http://www.twminduction.com/v8_kits/427.html No experience myself, but I know 2 guys with them (one fitting it currently to a 427S/O) |
$500 per hour.
That's more the Broberg makes an hour. |

Swap to a Speed Demon 650, mechanical or vacuum as your preference goes, and start with a complete baseline adjustment. Pick up a complete jet set and (if you go vacuum) a vacuum spring set, and work it through from there. It just takes a little patience and BGs (for me) respond well to the basic carb setup and tuning process. The Idle-Eze feature can help a lot without having to drill butterflies, etc. Your power valve is very unlikely to have anything to do with idle issues, BTW. |
Contact Bob Ream at Imagine Injection in Phoenix (272-6474) and talk with him about your injection vs Holley problems. I switched to his system from a Holley and would not switch back. I had my engine (FE 428) rebuilt specifically for the enjection and couldn't be happier.

Kevin...never had 1 problem with my EFI system (Edlebrock Victor Jr.). My comment was because it took such an effort to covert I would never go through that again. My plan was to save the system and drive the carb for one year. Then decide which system to use from that point on. But just replacing the EFI fuel system with the carb fuel system required alot more than I expected. New fuel pump, new lines, new in tank pick up, etc. However, I am very happy with the conversion even though I am still "tweeking" the Holley.i

Rat Man, Talk to Patrick at ProSystems. He'll build a tremendous carb for your exact application for not much more than what you'd pay for an out of the box HP Holley. I know that some people have good luck with Barry Grant carbs but there has been a whole lot of grumbling about them the last couple years. Poor performance, poor quality control and poor customer service seem to be the main gripes. Sticking with a carb will be much easier and cheaper and look more "correct" but it will still have the altitude drawbacks all carbs suffer from, to one extent or another.

Many of the SPF cars are happy running Pro System carbs. If I needed a new one that is where I would go: http://www.pro-system.com/

EFI vs Carb
I think you need to find a good Ford Mechanic or a local Cobra guy who can tune your carb / motor.
I have EFI and love it. Great hp and gas mileage. Very streetable. But I had problems. Thanks to a friend who is a Ford mechanic and a tune shop, we found all the problems and corrected them. Half of my Cobra buddies have carbs and they run with out problems. Dwight |
