Default Moving to AZ/Registration question

Guys, I am moving from San Diego to Gilbert soon. (Dan you may remember me from the 4th of July parade in Scripps Ranch a few years ago). I am going to bring my Ford F150 Supercrew over first to get AZ plates. (My Backdraft comes later!). So, what steps do I need to go through to get my truck registered? Most importantly, can it be done in one day? I was planning on coming over with a load, getting it registered and then returning to SD for another load. Any advice would be helpful, including where to go for registration/plates.

Thanks in advance!

Skip B.

Yes you can get it done in one day. If you have to smog your truck (5 yrs or older) it will just take longer that day. You will leave with plates and your license if you choose to do that also.
Good luck and welcome.

ps
Send MikieC your email and he will send emails as to what's going on.

Dave,

Thanks very much! I assume that I would find a DMV office (or whatever it is called in AZ), go there and they would send me out for a smog test (2004 truck). If I remember right your smog test stations are state run? Is that still true? Also, where is a DMV office close to Gilbert?

I look forward to meeting you guys soon!

THere is an office just west of Greenfield and just north of Baseline. So far, you're batting 1000 Skip. Yes I do remember you and you are most welcome. I'm sure that the Cobra Crew around here will be glad to meet and greet. Let me know when you get settled in and we'll set something up.

That's the one I went to for the cobra. Piece of cake.
Smog is state run but by contractors.

Oh it's MVD here. Not sure why as everyone calls it dmv.

Thanks for all your help. I just wonder if I can do the registration with my CA driver's license? We have a place, but just haven't made the move yet.

Dan, I look forward to seeing you again and getting involved with what appears to be a very active group!

Default Sorry! Another question.

I have another dumb question. So, I show up with my CA driver's license and insurance card from AAA of California, can I still get my truck registered?

I read your MVD site and this is not too clear.

Skip, just move in and worry later about registration. There is lots of waiver time here. Some people never register because it's cheaper where they came from.

I have two vehicles registered to my AZ house and I have a CA drivers license. They don't care where your license is from. If your insurance covers you in AZ, then you are fine.

Skip...as long as you have your CA LIC and CA plates you can drive without care until your CA tags are up. That's what I did. Also, used the Greenfield DMV for my AZ plates having moved here from SFO. You can get your new DL, pink slip and plates all in the same 1 hr vislt.

Question

Gentlemen,

Here is the challenge. My California registration expires at the end of October. I was hoping to avoid paying CA for the year and then doing it again in AZ. It looks like my biggest problem will be having Arizona insurance, which I don't have yet. I just found out AAA insurance in CA is a different company than AAA in AZ. Curious, I thought AAA was nationwide?

I may just pay CA for another year and then take my time getting the truck registered when we finally get settled in.

I went through the same thing with AAA. It is easy to get your policy changed to AZ though. Your reg in AZ will be alot cheaper than San Diego. You will save some $ if you do it now.

FYI, CA law states that if you have a CA drivers license, all vehicles operated in the state have to registstered in CA. My uncle split time between the two states, and had to prove he was an AZ resident after receiving a ticket. Something to think about before you surrender your CA license.

Your right about AAA AZ and CA. I have AAA AZ for all my cars except the Cobra. I used State Farm and had no trouble what so ever. You are right about the process. 1st you must have insurance then register and plate the car. At this point you should renew in CALIF and wait until you are here and ready for the rest of your cars. I did this, driving the Cobra for about 5 months until the CA tags expired.

Thanks for all the help! I look forward to meeting you guys!

A strange thing happened the other day. I had my Backdraft in the shop for a mystery oil leak. (Turned out to be the coil!) Another customer was admiring my car and asked if it was for sale. I said, sure at the right price. He asked what I wanted, I shot him what I thought was a high price and he said, Sold! I was shocked. Apparently he had just inherited some money and wanted a new toy. So, I sold my car!

Now, after I move, I will be looking for another car! I loved my Backdraft, but an all black car in AZ and the right amount of $$$ made me do it!

Let me know if anyone has a car for sale. Backdraft, Superformance, or ?

See you guys soon!
