Which DMV are you going to? In Arizona they will attach their ID tag. It is Blue in color. I have not heard of them removing the Shelby tag. The Shelby plate will only be for show. The blue tag will be the new ID number for the car. The car will be registered as a 1965 SPCN. Means no immissions inspection. Take all your paperwork, your classic car insurance info to the DMV. You can always ask for a supervisor. They are used to registering cobra replicas.

They are going to check the number on the engine block just to make sure it hasn't been reported stolen.
Mike, do you know which DMV office is the best one to go to up in the PHX area?

Larry,
I heard most of them are up to speed in getting these cars registered. I'm sure those with more recent experience will show up here.

Go to the office in Mesa. They will accept the car cor what you say it.is and they will use.the number on the current registration. They are alot more criendly than the greenfield office.

Thanks guys I'll give it a couple of days and see which way to go. The car was purchased at DenBeste Motorsports in CA. The engine was also built in CA and tax was paid all reciepts or present. They're issue did'nt seem to be about tax it was about authenticity of being a real continuation car.
One more question, will it hurt the value or create doubt of its originality of the car to register it with that blue tag?
Thanks everyone.

Won't effect it's value at all. May even help it as it will be titled as a 65. Each state deals with registration differently of course but it will have a 65 registration issued from AZ.

Cobra Title in AZ
My experience with the Avondale DMV (Van Buren & Dysart) was a 15 minute deal. My car was titled and plated in California as a 1965 FFR Roadster. I presented the title and in 10 minutes had the transfer done. No inspection, no new vin plate, nothing!
I know it is apples and oranges vis a vis your situation but the main point is that I had no problems and a supervisor advised the clerk what to do. Very friendly place (for a change).
Too bad it wasn't alreadly titled out of state like mine.
Try them...

You mentioned they are having a problem with it being a real continuation car. I wonder if they are thinking about the cars Mr. Shelby tried to pass off as continuation many, many years ago. They were titled as not of road use or something like that.

Mt csx wasnt already titled out of state and was o the origianl MSO but they let me keep the csx tag and affixed the blue azirona with the "new" vin to the front frame rail and I was in and out in 30 minutes and it is titled in Az as a 1965 Shelby Cobra, They didnt even ask me about the engine ither than teh approx build cost for taxes. I went over the the west side in Glendale off of 59th ave I think

i used the MVD near I-60 and Greenfield in Mesa. It was titled in CA as special construction and was do so again in AZ. Pretty fast, used CA VIN number which was affixed by the CAL CPH.

You could always get it titled in another state first. Not that hard to do.

Mine was easy? Gordon went with me to inspect and went into MVD - argued a bit with clown there about value? Got out of there with $25.00+ some change? I will admit it was a concern so I took him with me so experience not as stressful (in Mesa).
(That is upper Mexico for the non-Arizona boys/girls)

Your Shelby distributor should be able to help with DMV. Hard to believe they do not have someone who handles registration issues. You have the original MSO from Shelby stating the CSX# and date of manufacture. In Ca many guys go straight to SB100. Don't know about AZ, but that info is out there on the web............I guess I should have asked if this is the first time registration??? Do they question the permanent CSX# on the upper right hand frame member........????
|
I agree your distributor should stand up and be of help. Lean on him!
