SB oil capacity
Question: For years I have been hearing different numbers on how much oil goes in a SB ford motor with a external oil cooler. Correct me if I am wrong, a SB 351 with a standard oil pan holds 6 quarts of oil with a filter change, 5 without. Plus (or add) 1 quart with a external oil cooler up front like the ones most of us in Arizona run to cool the oil from the hot temps hear. I would like to clear this up. It make sense if 5 quarts stay in the pan 1 in the filter and one quart throughout the hoses and cooler itself oil changes should be 7 quarts. Racing pans are a different story, they tell you the pan holds a larger capacity of oil or not. Your input would be greatly appreciated.

In my many years as a pump jockey/mek-a-nick, I always put 5 quarts of oil in a stock SBF, with the filter change. Ran across very few cars that required more, with stock oil pans and systems. I'm thinking that you're thinking wrong. The minimal amount of additional oil needed for the lines going to an external oil filter would probably be less than 4 oz. unless they are REAL long.

Did everyone hear that? Karl admits to working on Fords. Never thought I'd see it.
I believe that Karl is correct. More interestingly, why the question?

Ditto that, and from what the OP also assumed or read or heard -
... a SB 351 with a standard oil pan holds 6 quarts of oil with a filter change, 5 without ...
Nope, a standard oil filter does not take 1 QT of oil, more like 1/3rd QT.

Danr, of course I worked on Fords....They wre always breaking something so they made me a good living. There was always money to be made when it rained because they had a nasty tendenancy to miss or stall if they went through a big puddle of water. WD40 did wonders for them and made me a hero, many times.
AL427, The owners' manuals and Motor's Manuals almost always said to use the additional quart of oil, when changing the filter. Maybe they thought it was better to have more than enough rather than to trust the installer with measuring a few ounces. ??

Most applications of the 351 also used a short filter.

Simple when I change the oil in my 347 I'll check the dipstick to see if it is filled correctly. The fellow I bought my SPF from said 8 qts with a filter change. I'll find out soon enough.
