Default On The Road Again

This coming Tuesday, I'm taking my Purple Haze Cobra on another road trip. I'll overnight first in Durango CO, then on to Boulder for the big Cobra Museum whoop-de-doo. The following Monday, I'll head North for Mt Rushmore, The Black Hills, Sturgis, Deadwood and then on to The Devil's Tower in WY. I'll eventually turn South and meander back to home in East Bumbscrew. Should be about 3000+- miles of smiles.

Have a great trip. This is the second year in a row I'll miss the Shelby American Collection party. Our daughter still lives in CO and we try to go back to visit her around this time so I can go to the museum, but for two years in a row we've had to go back for a funeral in July instead.

Durango is a cool old town. Stay at the old hotel by the rail yard. (If you have time take the train to Silverton - it's an awesome ride). An alternate stop if you aren't going to Durango for other reasons is to go to the museum in Gateway, CO. It's the collection of the John Hendricks that owns the Discovery Channel group.

Tony, I think some of us will be going to Gateway on Sunday. At least I'd been told that we'll be going somewhere to look at a very large automobile collection.

Gateway's location is way out there like in the middle of nowhere. Might consider your visit on the way home
Love Silverton, Uray, Teluride, Deadwood. You will too.

Karl, I've also enlisted another good friend @ the museum (Bernie) to keep an eye on you, I'll send him your Phone#, and you, his K? You will be treated like family; not like they would treat me Cheers KarlzEE.

Tony, he's still on the road. I think he enjoyed himself , but will let him tell you, yesterday he was at Devils Tower, today Mt. Rushmore. He sent me a "Bunch" of pictures but don't how to post them from my Email to the site, remember I'm NOT computer savvy.

I've been away, but I'm BACK. Door to door was 2,999 miles of smiles (except for the 90+ minute construction delay going East on US 50 from Montrose, and then the rain I hit about 80 miles South of Denver on my way to Boulder. Had an excellent time at the Shelby American Museum. Steve Volk, THE MAN, took great care of me. I got to meet Alan Grant and a few other ex-Shelby employees, Pat Bondurant (Bob's Widow), as well as a bunch of the museum workers and volunteers. Also good to see Ken Walker from the Texas Cobra Club, sans Cobra. I enjoyed the Friday night meal, provided by the museum, the Saturday afternoon car show, the Saturday night banquet for the show participants, had breakfast Sunday with The Shelby and Museum folks and then a restricted tour of Stephen Tebo's HUGE automobile collection. All this Shelby stuff was thanks to TommyRot (Alfa02) in Washington. He is the person that coerced me to go. All started off with a bunch of the folks from Washing going and then they started dropping like flies and finally, NONE showed. He somehow got Steve to show me the red carpet and boy, did he! I totally enjoyed myself. The Monday after the Shelby stuff, I took off. Stayed in Lead, SD which is just a few miles outside of Deadwood. Looked around Deadwood and Sturgis (didn't loose anything there). Went to the Devil's Tower in WY before heading homeward. Stayed overnight in Cheyenne. Lovely town....NOT. Decided to break away from my "NO FREEWAY" routing and took interstates to Montrose. Gotta say, that was a magnificent drive. Took me down through Vail and lots of gorgeous, high elevation scenery! Didn't have the tight twisty turnies but plenty of wide sweeping, high speed turns. From Montrose, I went back to the non-expressway routing down through Silverton and on to Durango. More drop dead gorgeous scenery, with some "interesting" curves. Went on to Gallup, for the evening. (Yes, I do pick the most wonderful places to overnight!) Then it was only another 350+- miles to Casa Bebout. I arrived at 12:30pm Friday with gazillions of murdered bugs on #2119. Car ran great. Not a hitch. My engine is approaching 90,000 miles and does like to spew some oil blow-by during spirited driving, but I think I'll wait to hit 100,000 before rebuilding to little girl.
Really the only disappointing part of the trip was the extraordinary high temperatures but, still a whole lot better than rain or snow. Overall, a great trip and I'm glad it I did it. Gotsta do this stuff before I get OLD!

Just for grins, or growls, I kept track of my gas purchases. Only once did I pay more than my local Costco for high test. One thing I did notice was that the regular was only 85 octane in the higher elevation areas. I just stayed with high test and spent $702.35 for 173.9 gallons. Average price was $4.04 and I got 17.25 MPG. Not unhappy with the MPG but would sure like to see gas prices from a coupe years ago.

Default This is how they treat friends, not me .

Well Karlos, I'm glad I could help I thought calling in favors was just a one and done, but oh no, I now have a "Chores List" to do @ Steve's & Allen's houses, just the airfare will kill me The Boys said, we will treat him "Like Family" not like they would do for me Cheers Buddy Boy, Tommyrot.
