Cobra Owner New to AZ

I want to intoduce myself. I am from Chicago area (Rockford) and have decided to retire and become a "snow bird" and winter in Mesa AZ. We bought a Park Model RV in Towerpoint and plan to trailer the Cobra since we have enough parking space for it.

I have an FFR Cobra so will be looking for trips with other Cobra owners. Also have an interest in track days.

What tracks and orgainzations should I look into for open track days? Web sites??

As some of you may guess, being from Chicago means I know Ralph. I hope you do not hold that against me, Ha Ha.

We are expecting to be in Mesa early Jan. 2014 and stay through March or into April. I am really looking forward to retirement. I am trying to convince myself it is a "graduation" to retirement.

Welcome to AZ, Lee. You will find everything you need to know on this website. There are numerous functions all year long. You can race or autocross this weekend and in Wilcox next weekend.
You should attend our Anniversary Party on Dec 8th to meet the gang and see their cars.

NEVER I say NEVER tell anyone you know Ralph.
Welcome to Mesa. Now you will be known as one of the East Bumscrew crew.
Hope to meet ya soon.

Welcome to the east valley. I look forward to meeting you and checking out your FFR.

Lee, you have to watch out for these guys. They'll lead you astray. Just listen to me and you'll be fine.. What Dave said about Ralph is spot on. Don't and I can't stress it hard enough, let on that you know Ralph. They'll watch you like they watch him..(that's all in fun, but where there's smoke....) Look forward to seeing and shaking hands.

We have a Ralph here?

LRRCobradreamer 11-04-2013 03:48 PM

Looking forward to meeting you guys, but Dec. 8 is not possible, since I will not retire till Dec 31 and my trailer would not be ready any way.

I am getting a Serpent Express trailer made for me and it should be ready by Jan 1.

I put 5000 miles on it this year so between Az and ILL I could hit 10K miles. WOW that is a lot of Cobra time. What is that old saying about time spent fishing? I think it applies to Cobra time also.

Hey Lee, welcome to AZ. I am about 55 miles away from you.

Karl Bebout 11-04-2013 04:25 PM

Welcome to God's Country, Lee. There are several FFR cars on this end of town, and a few of us "non-perky-butt-types". Watching this site is a very good idea to keep up on things the Cobra guys are doing, or at least have heard about. Also on this end of the valley are two freebie, weekly, car shows. Fridays at the Albertson's at Power Rd. just north of Baseline and Saturdays at Kmart/Target on Power, north of the 60 and south of Southern Ave. Good chances to do lots of lying' n braggin'.

Let me add my welcome too. To add to Karl's post, there is an every sunday cruise-in at Fountain Hills, a 20 min from the me ( I live in Mesa). A saturday night cruise in Scottsdale and many, many more. In Mesa we have, Dan (already gave you a shout), Dave, Superstition Bill, New Hampshire Bill, Hector, Karl (above), Jeff and me, Mesa Mike. Since your coming here from "cold country" i'm sure you have a heater. It's a nice thing here for the winter runs. Welcome to AZ and give us a run down on your car.

Fitz 11-04-2013 09:21 PM

Welcome but watch out for the Mesa group! They only come out on the weekends "cus" they are all on "work Release". In my high school days my home was in Aurora. That heater will really come in handy in September....ha

LRRCobradreamer 11-05-2013 11:56 AM

Thanks for the warm welcome.

I have a 347 SBF that make 417 hp and 418 ft-lbs, with Quick Fuel carb. New T5 from Gordon Levy and torsen diff with 5 link from Levy also. Torson bar on the front only and running Goodyear Eagles 245s on front and 315s on back.

As far a heaters, I have two. One under the dash and the seats are heated too. I have driven it in 27 F weather because I had too and it was not bad with the heated seats. Just my left hand got cold.

I have been on Road America three times and Blackhawk Farms once and done two autocross schools. I like the road tracks better than the autocross just because of seat time. Last time I hit 140 mph on RA and that was all I wanted to go. Cobra would have gone faster, but without any aero and my experience (or lack of) that was fast enough.

I put 1900 miles on a road trip from Rockford to Hot Springs AK and it was no trouble at all for the Cobra.

Hey Lee,
Welcome to Arizona. You'll love some of the runs we go on. It'll be nice to have another FFR that can kick butt. I don't know of a Ralph in the club, but there is a Ralphie. ( One and only ) :D

Welcome!

Lee…just took a look at the map and you are less than 5 miles from me (Power & McDowell. Closer to Karl and Dave and Hector.

Track information: There are off and on auto cross events but I stop attending because of the "seat time". I'd rather spend my $$$ on track events. OK, there is a track in Wilcox, AZ about 3 hours south of us. There is going to be an event on Dec 15, 2013. (I know you can't attend). There will be a track event on a track that used to be called Firebird. It will be sponsored by the Panera Club of AZ and will be in APR. A Historics race Monterey, CA in May and an Historic's race in PHX in Sept. There are tracks in Palmdale, CA (Willosprings) and in Buttonwillo, CA. The old firebird track in PHX is now under new mgmt and may add some track events next year. Many NASA events around at the above mentioned tracks. There are not many of us here that track our cars. When you get here we can discuss this info more. Looking forward to see you here.

Danr55 11-06-2013 05:51 PM

I think the Friday nice event Karl speaks of is at Sossaman and Baseline. Not power and baseline.

Karl Bebout 11-06-2013 08:36 PM

I do'n thin so. I was just there last week.

WOW, with all the abuse I get with these guys I think I'll stop hanging around them, NOT!!! They are really a fun bunch of guys (well, most of them, and the others know who they are!)
By the way Mike, I heard the Panera Club will be doing the track event in souped-up bread delivery trucks!**)**)**)

OH FER DUMB!!! Sometimes I think I should have never stopped drinking! Danr was right, in that I was wrong about the East Valley Friday night car show being on Power Rd. I was wrong, wrong, wrong. Its on ELLSWORTH Rd just North of Baseline. duh!
