Does anyone recognize this? I found it floating around in the intake manifold this morning. Car ran really funny. Backfired twice and then ran really rough. I thought the timing gear miight have slipped. Got out the light and checked the timing and it was fine. Then I heard this metal banging around in the manifold. Turned off the motor and took it down. Found this in the right side of the manifold. It doesn't look like anything I've seen recently. Had the air filter off to change it three days ago and before that it ran fine.
I did change to Macro and took some better photos.. check them out. Also checked out the carb. Nothing I could see there. Also no parts missing from the air filter.. It is a puzzlement.

I'll take a couple of shots. Is the air filter base intact? Also, check the carb for any broken parts that may have fallen in, particularly around the air-horn where the filter base sits and inside the venturis. Good luck.;)

It is magnetic.. so I presume it is steel. It's too bright to be pot metal.. Best I can guess is something was attached to the inside of the new airfilter and when I installed it, the piece fell off and dropped through the carb...and no, Rat Boy has not been working on my motor..!!

You might have bent a valve, there are clear impact lines on that metal blob. Rat Boy's foreign object was a lot smaller than that big turd.
You know what a leak down test is don't you?

It looks like a flat washer that went into a cylinder and back out. Run a leak down test.

Wow, that piece looks "rolled, folded and hammered"!:eek:
Is it possible for something to drop in from the top, get beat around by a valve and then spit back up into the intake? Years ago, I saw an air filter wingnut get dropped into the running engine through the carb. Lots of clacking sounds before we got it shut off. We found the beat up wing nut in the exhaust manifold so it had made the whole journey through the valves.

Hmmm,
Its magnetic and fairly malleable...makes me think stamped or formed material..on or around the carb...Im guessing a piece of throttle /choke?.
But at this point, I think identification of the offending blob is a moot point and you should certainly remove and disassemble the heads as at least one bent valve, damaged seat is more than probable.

When you were bolting the carb on, do you remember looking for a missing lock washer for the carb studs? Just a thought. Agree that it's a moot point now. Off with it's heads!

Dan has had the intake off so many times, he can probably do it in his sleep. Heads a few times too. His Ford keeps his wrench turning skills current.

If it were a bolt, there should be a thread or two still visible. It looks to be too big of a hunk of crap to be a nut or washer. If it bounced around inside the combustion chamber it may have damaged the piston ring groove which may score the cylinder wall. The pistons are aluminum and are easily beat up with a piece of harder steel.
FOD potentially can bounce from one cylinder to another by getting spit back into the manifold and down another intake runner.

You should do both sides, that crap can bounce around in the intake manifold and get more than one cylinder on opposing banks. Best to check all cylinders.

I did both sides. 98-99% in each cylinder. Compression test shows 48-50 pounds in each cylinder. I would say I got extremely lucky.

That can't be right, should be upwards of 150 psi. Either something is really really wrong or you did something really really wrong. |
