Knock Offs???
Is it normal to be a real pain to remove the knock offs?
I have a 4 pound sand filled plastic/rubber mallet and it got the job done but is was a pain. I think being a 15" wheel it makes it a bit tight to get a good swing at it. Would a "lead hammer" make it easier or just less damage to the spinners. |
Dan, a 6 pound lead hammer is a must. You can toss the plastic sand filled one. Many sources but here is my favorite: Cobra Valley's Muther Thumper Lead Hammer Spinner Removal Tool
This is the one I have now but it is pretty beat up: American Hammer 6 lb. Lead Hammer Use anti-seize when you put them back on. You will thank me. AZ Bob |
Hey Dan, I had a hell of a time removing the spinners on my ERA when it was time to change the tires. The wheels had been on the car for 16 years and lube dry. When I up them back on I used anti-sieze grease on all mating surfaces. This also helps in tightening, it eliminates mating surface friction and gives you more tightening pressure. Now they spin off after a couple sharp hits. I recommend the anti-sieze, but, use it sparingly, you don't want silver goo coating your nice shiny wheels. Good Luck, Art Fink

Helpful suggestion, soak the spinners with WD-40 and then rotate the wheel using a lead hammer..... boom off they come.

Thanks Bob
I just ordered a American Hammer like you have. I wish I had it last night. |
Helps to also have arms like steel bands...you know, like Bob's.

I don't know, but I suspect if you leave the wheels on for a long time, it makes it really hard to take them off, especially for the first time. When I got my used Cobra the first thing I had to do was remove the tires and look around. I'm just that kind of guy..... The Cobra only had 1,700 miles in 3 years, but they were REALLY hard to remove with a lead hammer. Now it seems I'm always removing the wheels and they come off no problem. Originally there was plenty of never seize so that is not a factor.

Hey DWRAT, glad you are getting the American Hammer. They work great and the company owner used to hang out here on CC.
Bob, American Hammer will rebuild that hammer for you very economically. Check their website. Hal |
Regarding the anti-seize: it doesn't take much to be effective. A mechanic I knew long ago had a technique that he taught me for applications like this: "Put it on like you're trying to take it off." I've never forgotten that, and it has always worked for me.
Definitely do NOT follow the common saying, "If a little is good, then more is better" regarding anti-seize on your hubs (or any place else on a car, for that matter). |
Yup. 6lb American Hammer. I use a mixture of Mobil 1 synthetic grease and anti-sieze. That's the way to go.

Finish line has a special tool that might be a good investment, at 50% off, if there are any left. Personally have not used it but read several stories that made it sound like a good thing to have.

Always have to keep track of CC's goings on. Never know when Danr will break down again, or Ratboy might try to run someone down, or Road-Gator Mesa Mike might screw up his car, or sumpin. Went to Pretoria and then Saweto today. Heading to Victoria tomorrow where hopefully it'll be warmer.

Come on home if you want warmer...

What the he!! are you doing in Africa, Karl, trying to find your roots?
|
Ralphie, having a great time in Africa. Have met a whole bunch of articulate, very intelligent, hard working people. Had an upset bull elephant tire of out presence yesterday and he came 'way too close to bashing our Rover. He was "in musk" and was having his "green penis syndrome" resulting in rude behavior. Think we all can relate, on a MUCH smaller scale.
