Electric fuel pump alternative needed
 
I just installed the 4th Holly fuel pump (12-802-1 Blue) on my cobra in 8 years.
1 went bad, and the other 2 got so loud, I thought they were going bad. This 4th one is the loudest yet. Doesn't that figure !! Any quiet alternatives ?

I have heard good things about aeromotive. You could always go with a manual pump.

I switched back to a manual pump because the electric was noisy and unreliable.

For your engine and driving habits, a manual will do just fine and be a whole lot less money. You can also bypass your regulator. I'd look for one with a 3/8 " outlet, if you can find it, but a 5/16" should be adequate. Look for one to fit something like a 65-72 289-302 hipo.

Run a 14 gauge wire from battery to fuse to ignition switch to pump & ground. Electric pumps just can't last on the 18 gauge standard wiring. I went through 3 Holley Blues.

Carter P4600HP: Electric Fuel Pump Standard Pressure with 100 gph at 6-8 psi Output | JEGS

Whisper quiet Carter with built in regulator, 6-8psi. You absolutely cannot hear it. Works excellent with a 3/8" braided line going to an 850cfm holley on my 460 535HP crate motor. 3 years and a lot of driving and shifting at 6000 rpm ALL THE TIME. Never a stumble. $90
37 reviews on summit 4.5 out 5 stars. I went through a summit electric pump and most recently a holley blue. The holley blue was still working when I took it off but I could hear it over my sidepipes while idling. People would ask what the humming noise was.

Thanks for the information. Was trying to decide which fuel pump to put in the race car. Was leaning towards the Holley, but this Carte seems pretty good as well.

Part of the problem with electric fuel pumps in our cars is that they are external and due to that they are louder than in the tan pumps and have a shorter lifespan as they are not cooled by being submersed in fuel.

Will the Carter pump work with a one way line to the carbs ? I do not have a return line to the gas tank.

What is the advantage of an electric pump over a manual pump for a 7psi naturally aspirated application? I am closing in on 80,000 miles on high performance small block stroker motors running carbs up to 780 cfm. Many, many road course laps and 1/4 mile passes. I have never had a pump failure or fuel delivery issue of any sort.

The Carter will work fine returnless. I used the P4070 (4-6psi) since I use use it to fill the FiTech EFI pressure pump tank.

The P4600HP is a great pump as well.

Since its vane type impeller with an internal bypass regulator it won't struggle when deadheaded.
The Carter works great. The Holley Red I removed had Flintstone bearings in it, and the Quickfuel pump lasted 4 days. (My fault for not reading the fine print.) "Quikfuel pumps are designed for intermittent duty in drag racing only"
Carter universal pumps are still USA made.
While still a "lift" pump (pushes fuel vs pulling) they do prime themselves well vs some other brands. They should still be installed close to or at tank sump level like other Elec pumps.

Sounds like you're sticking with electric pump(s). If you do go mechanical, make sure you have a eccentric cam on the cam sprocket, some timing covers are blank and won't mount a pump also. I got tired of the noise, failures & rollback rides. Edelbrock makes a corn juice resistant mechanical pump that has outlasted all electrics combined so far for me (56k). I have about $600+ in pumps and tows I'll never see again...

If you are not racing and are running a normally aspirated engine, a mechanical fuel pump will work perfectly for most applications and will outlast an electric fuel pump. In a racing situation the electric fuel pump offers greater ability to fine tune the fuel delivery, and longevity is not that much of an issue as you typically are only running for 20 minutes or so and only several times per year.

Thanks guys. I've got the Carter on order. Maybe I'll take the time and $ to go mechanical next time. If this pump is quiet, it'll be like driving a new car !:rolleyes:

The other aspect is that in the event of accident, the pump stops when the engine stalls. No need to fit an electrical safety cut-out.
