Default Time for a Summer Trip

It’s time for a mid-summer Arizona Cobra Club Trip. No, you do not have to drive your cobras, but you can. It’s still hot and rains many afternoons up there. Bring out your Ford, Chevy, Dodge, Toyota, Honda or Kia. Combine friends in 1 car, bring the grandkids, or your mother in law and join us for our first annual “North in Arizona” summer trip.
If any of you have lived up north in Arizona you know how many attractions there are to visit near Flagstaff. The plan is to meet up on a Saturday morning in the near Phoenix area such as Fountain Hills or Carefree Hwy then drive north to visit scenic and interesting attractions, stay Saturday night at an acceptable motel with dining nearby and a welcome parking lot, then drive home Sunday. It’s about the people.
Our last event, the Fun Run was over on May 3rd and our next event is most likely September 12th for the Coronado Trail Run. That gives us over 4 months with no activity. Although a good time to fix our cars, it gets boring.
I have drawn up 7 different weekend runs up north that can be taken each year in July. Even Tucson members could join us. I have not planned for the far north such as Lake Powell or the Grand Canyon. Easy, fun drive but not a hard charging cobra trip.

I propose this as the first trip: Perhaps July 18 and 19.
Trip #1: Total 207 miles in about 7 hours with 3 stops.
Depart from Fountain Hills 9am fueled and fed
Fuel stop Payson
Tonto Bridge
Lunch/fuel stop Winslow
Meteor Crater
Quality Inn check in 3-4pm Quality Inn Winslow (AZ) - Motel Reviews - TripAdvisor (Right now $77)
Standin on the Corner photo ops (Gary & Vicki?)
Dinner nearby
Parking lot gathering for all (Avg high 93 low 62 degrees)
Sunday: Drive home via your favorite route.

I might even be able to get my sweetness interested, if air conditioning is involved.

Just a thought: last year we went up to Knab and it was an outstanding little trip. Returned through Monument Valley. Certainly not a Cobra trip for the dead of summer, but maybe late September or early October? OR, maybe Canyon de Chelley might be somewhat shorter? It would be uber cool to see a dozen snakes blasting along Monument Valley...

Hey Karl. Monument Valley sounds fun with a stay at the new Indian hotel in the valley.

Hey Bob. How about a trip up the Salt River canyon to Williams (standing on the corner) with an over night at the La Posada Hotel?

Mike, Salt River Canyon goes to Honda/ShowLow/Pinetop, not Williams (Gateway to the Grand Canyon).. or if you meant Winslow (Standing on the corner), that's quite a haul from Honda..

Default Alternate Route

Thanks for your input Mike. I assume you mean Winslow and not Williams. The intention for this kind of trip is to gather friendly people together, enjoy their company and visit new and/or interesting places. No hurrying, no long drives and don’t spend too much. Entry fees for Tonto Bridge is $5 per person and Meteor Crater is $18. I have no problem with staying at the LaPosada, it just costs more. Advantages would be access to more dining and even walking distance to the famous Winslow Corner Park. Problem is the LaPosada is sold out for that date. I tried to make a reservation. Hopefully our motel will have space for evening gathering like in Rio Rico and Kingman. Since this is actually a non-cobra trip we are not searching for twists and turns like Salt River Canyon. Also, the driving distance would increase substantially with no sight seeing stops.

Default Motels in Winslow

I just booked my room at Quality Inn: Quality Inn Winslow Arizona - Home AARP disc price is $76.50 plus all the other charges. Not many rooms left. There is also the Motel 6 https://www.motel6.com/en/motels.az.winslow.4012.html and Oak Tree Inn Oak Tree Inn Winslow - ReservationDesk.com next door to the Quality Inn. Tough to find a good motel in Winslow with good reviews. Oh Well, as long as they have a parking lot. Looks like the LaPosada is the best place but is all booked up.
Here is a list of all motels: http://www.yellowpages.com/winslow-az/hotels-and-motels

Default Summer Trip Cancelled

Due to lack of interest. I do understand. We bought these cars to drive, not to park and take the Prius. No harm done, no money spent but, I do have a bunch (7) separate overnight trip routes planned to the North Country during nicer weather. Perhaps we can start in the Spring or Fall next year.

I've heard that the Coronado Trail drive can be "interesting". Thinking I'd like to give it a try, this fall. Maybe early October?

Check with Dan Shinn. He, Scotty and I have run the trail the last 3 years in September. October is good too though.

Karl, Was it on the Coronado trail where you had your last oops?

No, his last oops was on the race track where he forgot to tighten his wheels.
It was his last last oops.

You guys are never going to cut him a break on that, are you? How about driving around with missing parts from one of his carburetors? Doesn't that get him credit for an Oops?

Karl is missing parts and Drat has too many.. maybe they should get together and average it out?

Guess I shouldn't make my comments so obtuse. After all the guff I got about driving up the side of that mountain, last September 19th, I just thought everyone would remember that I'd been on at least part of the Colorado Trail, and a part of it that no one else has driven.
