NO FLY ZONE Gila Bend 10/22/17
Scottie suggested that the No Fly Zone, rolling start, 1/2 mile top speed time trials at the Gila Bend Airport, could be an event for the Group. I like it!
The cost to participate is $200 and registration must be done on line, before the day of the event. There is a nominal $10@ entry for spectators, payable at the gate.
October 22, 2017 is the next scheduled event and here's the link with more information.

I am game for Gila Bend if the vett's wanna play. Any takers? I haven't found a way yet to take off the factory speed limiter but I doubt I can get to 155 in a half mile anyway

Ron, 155 in that short of distance would really be cooking, but your car just might do it.

I know it can't do it in the 1/2 mile but my BMW did 170 just over a mile from a rolling start so hopefully the Shelby should be able to keep up with a little red corvette!

Ron, be aware that there is a considerable difference between a little red corvette and a Z06 500+ Hp monster

Understood but without starting another fiberglass vs aluminum war at least Ford still makes their cars out of real steel!
(or at least a lot of aluminum)

I went there last fall as a spectator. If you choose to go, make it on Sunday. Saturday sells out fast, plus lots of waiting. Sunday was no waiting, race as often as you like. Most entrants with forced induction brought tons of ice to cool motors between runs. Windy day so dust & sand on track made high hp cars like the Mustang Cobra Jets have traction trouble even half way down the track. 1 ricer blew motor and had long cleanup time wait.
Best Mustang GT500 even 2014 ran 158mph in half mile. Highest speed that day was a C5 vette with twin turbos did 186mph. Fun to watch for $10 entry but lots of time between races. As spectator, bring shade, chairs, food and drinks. Not all participants fit under shaded "garage" area. Parking lot is dirt.
Be a fun day to just watch with you guys and bench race.
Finally, don't run your cobra unless it has wings.

Thanks for the advice Bob. 186 in a 1/2 mile is cooking no matter what kind of car it is. That is a monster. 158 in a GT 500 is every fast as well. I have never run that way from a rolling start in the Shelby but in the BMW plenty of times to surprise the ricer's. My wife did that in her little Audi SQ5 a month ago. for only a 3liter 6cyl with a supercharger it gets up and scoots in dynamic mode with 0-60 in a shade under 5 seconds . Not bad for a "Soccer Mom vehicle"

Last time, I took the CRV because of the parking lot. will do the same. Planning on attending.
At my age, I have no business driving 150+mph.

No Fly
Well, No Fly event is this Sunday and I hadn't thought of my Shelby as being underpowered until I saw the list of cars. I was surprised there are only about 130 cars on the registered list so I should be able to get 5-6 runs in at least
My Shelby may be the slowest on the track after seeing many cars with 900-1300 HP. I just plan on having fun and will enjoy legally being able to do triple digit speeds

It was a blast. I didn’t do as well as I hoped topping out at 147 for a high with a lot of wheelspin in very gear. About 150 cars and high speed was over 200 with a modded Lamborghini, ran against another Gt350 a few times and won those beat one z06 and lost to another one that had NOS added. I had until until he hit the juice and he blew past at 150 plus. Talk of another event in December. Winning the tires at 100 shifting into 3rd at 8000 is a bit squirrelly but the most fun you can have with your clothes on!

Great Day at the No Fly Zone
Beautiful day to watch fast cars. Got there about 9am. Listened in on Drivers Meeting. Informative. Record for No Fly Zone is 236mph by a full sized Lambo. Saw a black Lambo do 220+mph, a Hyabusa do 217mph and a GTR do 205mph. Holy Smokes! Boy were there some fast cars. Looked safe for all. Never saw a major problem. Spectator crowd was not as large as I expected so you could see well. Fastest Vette was in the 190’s. Any Corvette over 160 had power adders.
Watched Ron Evans with his georgous 2016 Shelby Mustang GT350 in Deep Impact Blue Metallic with White Stripes. My kind of colors!
Here is a youtube video of Ron’s first run. The orange car he is running with is identical to his GT350, completely stock, so the difference is in the driver. Ron ran 143+mph on this run but eventually made to 147 mph. Remarkable runs. I do believe he was enjoying himself.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phcp...ature=youtu.be
Met up with Karl and Mesa Mike to share an easy-up with Ron’s wife, Pam and their daughter, husband and 9 month old grandson. Sure wish the wife would let me run. Looked like too much fun.

Thanks Bob, it was a lot of fun. They are talking about another one in December. I didn't know this but they allow riders as long as they have a helmet. Yes After beating (narrowly) a stock Z06 I raced a second one and thought I had him until he hit his NOS and blew last me in the last 100 feet. One of my favorite cars our there was a 31 Model A hot rod with a flathead that did 105 proving the goal was to have fun no matter what the speed
