Registration/Plates in AZ
 

Ok-- I am finally ready to register the car and get a set of plates-- --Will probably do some personalized plates and don't know the procedure-- Like many -- I don't seem to have a lot of time to do stuff like this-- I want to register the car as a '64--

How do I find out if the plate that I want is not already taken?
What about tax on the car when I register?
What about inspection on the car when I register?

Is there any location in town that seems to be the best for this?
I know that Gordon must do this on a regular basis--with success--

Any helpful hints out there?

Hey Jim,

It's about time you have that thing finished.

The process is very simple. Take the Car, and all your paperwork to a MVD office class 2 inspectation station. There you will receive an AZ VIN for your car. It's painess, all they will do is check your numbers. Once, that is done then go to a local MVD office and get your title and registration. There you will pay your fees and taxes. About an hour later it's done.

The year they will give depends on what ERA has put on their MSO.

Been there and done that.

How much are we looking at in fees and taxes when we go to the MVD......

Fees if I remember correctly for my car were 28.00. This was for a double title as my MSO was just in my name. taxes are generally the normal sales tax for the price of the kit.

When i brought my car in from Ca.,it cost me $23.50 to register it:JEKYLHYDE .As it was already registered as a 65 Ford.But Az.listed it as a special Construction.%/

Did they list it as a 65 for the year? The recon listing is widely used with street rods here in az. The only plus to this ddesignation is that you go through emmissions as a 67 year. My wife's Hotrod is titled that way.

It also seems as though The Tucson area does things a little different.

I believe Bill and John are titled as 65's.

Car should be home this week-- The engine guys are ready to start it any day know-- I just saw it Saturday and fluids were filled and all parts were on -- it is just a matter of turning it over and dialing in the fuel injection-- It turned out awesome-- way over the top--

What does your schedule look like later in the week-- or even on the weekend-- If the timing is right -- I will also show you another little toy I have -- I bought a new shifter Kart (Trulli --Tony Kart, 125 shifter) and we run them at a track 4 miles North of my house--- Hard to believe-- but a friend of mine built a 1/2 mile state of the art track on his property a couple of years ago-- a few of the F1 drivers helped design it-- When I say state of the art-- it is probably one of the nicest shifter Kart tracks in the nation-- beats any track in AZ!-- The kart is to help me improve my driving skill at a grass roots level--
These shifter karts are intense-- because they acelerate so quickly and stick to the track so well and stop unbelievably fast-- 3 G's in the corners--

I used to have your Phone #-- Email your # to me or call me on my cell at 602 405 1969 and we can nail down a time to meet-- I still have a poster from HighTech "with your name on it"--

Quick question about your plate "Coyled" -- How did you register your car? -- and is there a website or phone # or ?? that I can contact the DMV to see if the plate that I want is available?-- I am unfamiliar with the process here-- What about sales tax?

Waiting for the temps to drop under 100. Not much fun shooting the breeze or driving these things in 108 degree temps like yesterday.

I fell into the Recon Vehicle trap back in '97 and had to smog it. The next year started a 5-year exemption. This year I had to smog it again. Well, no way was I going to pass w/o the cats, pump and a lean profile so I retrofitted all that crap and went in. I swear it was the funniest thing I've seen in a long time. The first woman thinks it's a brand new jap car, doesn't even have me pop the hood and hollers to the next guy OBD...OBD for him to get out the OBD computer link. I get up to the roller and he asks me where the computer is. Well I knew where this was going, but showed him the computer anyway. After a lot of head scratching and circle jerking, he calls the guru over, guru points to my 427 badge, clicks some stuff in his computer and I do a test. You guessed it...a CO window of 1200! Well I blew a 39. Hell I coulda done that w/o touching the motor! **) :JEKYLHYDE :LOL:

Mike's right....If they class it as a recon then it must meet 1967 standards. They did that with Ginny's Rodster. The nice thing is that I can throw away the motor and go V8. She still says no.

AZ COBRA, Hey Jim, I registered my FFR up there in Phoenix and paid $25.00 for the inspection which included the Arizona VIN. The inspection was done on the southeast side of town at the DMV which is located off of I-10, it is about one block west of I-10 some where around 52nd St. I could be very wrong about 52nd street - call Gordon Levy and he will walk you through it. You will have to have your manufactor's ID number, a simple piece of aluminum with the number stamped on it, pop rivited to the frame somewhere. The inspector will look for it. My car is registered as a 1965 Ford Roadster and it cost me $48.75 for the plates. The cost can be less because I purchased the "Historic Vehicle " plate which cost $25.00 extra. I went to the DMV office in Scotsdale which is about one mile east and one mile north of Gordon Levy's shop. I highly recommed this location. John

What's the "recon" classification?

The recon class is where the state of arizona is supposed to put kit cars. Mostly home built cars with out MSO's or if they cannot determine what the vehicle is or looks like. What it does is it allows you to register your car. Generally the year of build, while complying to a 1967 or 68 emissions standards. IE: no cats, and very wide Co and HHC readings. It also gets the state more money in Tags and fees.

To AZCOBRA, I don't know what a "shifter Kart " is ??? Is this some thing that we, as a bunch of Cobra guys, could do and enjoy ? Can we rent a Kart there ? Do they run on the weekends ? On a personnel side, I am looking for a really cheep go-kart for my twin 10 year old grandsons. Is there anything up there in the $100.00 price range ? Thanks, John

A shifter cart is a go cart that is on major amounts of steroids.

There are shifter cart courses at Bondurants. Yes, we could have lots of fun with them. I am trying to set up a cobra day at Bondurants. I'll see if we can add shifter carts.
