Can We Talk Insurance?
I have Northeast Classic. About $225 a year, 6000 miles, limitations to and from car shows, etc. Allstate won't do it. AAA won't do it. I've heard American Collectors is $425 a year for 7500 miles. Any suggestions for something else?

Check out Hemmings Motor News. There are all kinds of insurance companies listed that will handle classic and kit cars.

Robert, AON says no more. They stopped last fall. You are grandfathered in but they aren't doing any new ones. AAA and AON both told me to call American Hobbyist. I did. They told me on the phone they won't. They are even on the Kirkham web site. I filled out the application on line. We'll see what happens. I'll call them again tomorrow.

That's the problem. Companies that used to insure cobra's no longer do. The other game they play is quoting one premium and ending up with a much higher one. Building the car was easier than insuring it!

American Hobbyist just last week insured mine:confused:
I applied the first week of Jan--I have Allstate for everything else, house , cars, personal, etc. , they'd insured my SPF at an exorbirant rate, IMO, wouldn't insure my '89 NAF at all--so I searched elsewhere--premium was actually lower than first quoted.. |
I went through the insurance process a couple of weeks ago - ended up with State Farm - pretty easy and it is about $350/year never mentioned any mileage limits -
I also talked to American Collectors and they wanted $240 - Good Luck - jim BTW - Jim (Mrpink) thanks for your help the registration process was pretty easy - I have 80 miles on the car so far and of course still working on the bugs - in the process of changing the exhaust gaskets from standard leaking ones to copperseals - hope to be on one of your rides soon |
I have State Farm with no problem. I think its about $320/yr. Can't recall if thats 7500 or unlimited miles?
They've always been good to work with. They insure my 73 vette too at again a reasonable rate. |
State Farm wants all my cars on the policy. And that total is about double of my Allstate. Progressive wants $1200 a year. I'm still calling and will post the results.

Just called Grundy, 450 a year, no deductable. No milage limits. Emailing me a application. Sounds pretty good. American Hobbyists won't do owner built cars. 2nd time I called them.

It seems like all states have different experiences with insurance. For example, I'm in Illinois, and State Farm wants $1100/yr and all other vehicles insured with them. That was the best I could find.
Some of the AZ guys with State Farm seem to be getting a much cheaper rate...? |
I have my car on AON, but they said they won't renew. Got a quote from Grundy on line at about $345, but I didn't state that the car is a replica.....maybe that doesn't matter to them; we'll see. State farm and farmer's weren't interested. The game continues.......

In Iowa American Family was $307 per year.
Here in CA, AAA was $2100 every 6 months and Wawanesa is $275 per year. All policies were as just another coar on the policy like a Neon or Corvette. |
Mrpink, when I tried to go with Grundy, they said they would not do Cobra Replicas. Same story when I tried AAA which I think writes through AON or American Hobbyist. Thought I was going to be all set up and then saw their disclaimer that they wouldn't cover Cobras or dune buggies. I've been with Metlife through Condon & Skelly for about two years now and have no complaints. Haven't had any claims and my premium didn't get any higher after the first year. They go on an agreed value, did want a written appraisal, some pictures, and an annual mileage limit. You can check with Condon Skelly on line if Grundy drops off on you.

i switched to grundy about 2 yrs ago when my other carrier stopped handling cobras/replicas despite 3 toy cars covered for 10 yrs with them and a clean record. grundy however does have some restrictions : no one under 25 allowed to drive the car, not regular transportation, no racing or speed events, no errands, no parking lot parking, cant drive to work and a few others. rates are fair however and i can live with their restrictions. however, know that if you don't abide by their rules and have an incident that is attributed to violation of same then insurance for that claim is null and void. "you play and stray, then you pay " i guess would summarize it. most other collector type car insurance co's have similar restrictions, it is the sign of the times (high claims rate for cobra replicas by most carriers) and a trade off for lower rates and other perks : zero deductible, agreed value being two big ones. bill |
I just got a quote on my '84 Vette with Parish Heacock Insurance for $250 per year (100/300/50 and 100/300 with 3000 limit and agreed value).
Anyone have their Cobra insured with them? |
State Farm-------Antique/Replica/Classic agreed upon value, 40k 250.00 per year with towing!!!!!!Only vehicle insured, good driving record, CHECK IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I have Allstate.. it is double what it was in California however..... with lower limits and higher deductables... I was told that there are far more claims per mile in AZ than Cal... It isn't cheap that's for sure.... Mulv |
