Sunday the 15th.. Punkin Center Redeaux

I think Ginny and I are gonna retrace Mr. Pinks steps and go to Punkin center for lunch then continue on to Phoenix via Globe.

The temps are supposed to be about 80.

I would be up for that. The guy at the bar in PC said there was still a stretch of road that wasn't paved between PC and Globe. But he was drunk. Maybe Fitz knows.

mrpink 02-10-2004 07:48 AM

That's about 220 miles for me. About 260 for you Mike. This is an all day thing.

Maricopa 02-10-2004 08:06 AM

Jeez, the poor denizens of Punkin Center just today felt free to un-lock their daughters and now Mr. Pink's coming back?!? :D

You guys better not wear out those Cobras before I get mine done!

Mike

Jim,

If I send an email out to the gang, where would be the best place to meet? I'm thinking Fort McDowell Casino. Any other ideas?

Mike

"Jeez, the poor denizens of Punkin Center just today felt free to un-lock their daughters and now Mr. Pink's coming back?!?"

Mike, I brought one of the daughters back with me. I'm done with her. Have to return her.

MikeC, thats OK. Better check with Tonto. Or the Texaco station south side of Shea before 87. Where we got the first of many stops for water for your car Sat.:D

BPWilliams 02-10-2004 12:04 PM

Say What?

OK give me a clue before I sign up for this crazy adventure!%/ Now just where are you going Mike, unpaved roads?  Do they have gas stations on the way? (big issue for me) Let me have some more info so I can make up my mind if this is a good thing to do.

Jim and myself are going to the Dyno on Saturday to post some good numbers, I want to see how good that exhaust is that I paid big bucks for.....:3DSMILE: We are running 110 octaine so hopefully we wont blow the heads off%/

L8R,
Brian

mikiec 02-10-2004 12:11 PM

Brian,

The trip will be to Punkin Center for lunch. Yes there is a gas station there. As far as the rest of the trip? We will have to find out whether or not it is paved. If not then we will return the way we went.

Good luck at the dyno. Don't break anything.

Time to Punkin Center is just about 1.5-2 hours from my house at Greenway and Cavecreek. From 87 and Shea it is 40 minutes.

The first gas station on 188 just past the rest stop is called Jakes Corner and they don't have premium gas. If you go towards Punkin Center there is one that has 91 octane on the left.

They have been working on the road past the marina, which is past the bridge (if you haven't seen this bridge you should drive to it, go right onto Apache Trail just past the dam and take pictures). It turns into dirt just beyond the dam. The back side is worth seeing. Of couse there is no water coming out of it because the lake is only 30% full but that is still more then any of the other lakes around combined. You can see where the high mark of the lake was by looking for the Green above the brown dirt area. (I sound like a tour guide teacher). Teddy Roosevelt dedicated this bridge back early 1900s.

If you want to continue to the Marina continue past the bridge and dam towards Globe just past the SRP entrance on your left. You come to a "Front Store" (that looks like it use to be a gas station). Stop and tell them you are meeting me there (I won't be there) and ask for a ride down to the dock. A guy with a golf cart will ride you down to the docks from the parking lot. Give him $5 and tell him to watch the cars for you when he comes up and down. The cars will be fine if you choose to do this. My boat is out on J Dock called Fitzus. There are good restrooms there and pop/beer. Also there is a Forest Service Community Center same area as this store that shows the history of the dam etc (educational and good clean restrooms).

You can continue towards Globe about 15 minutes and you come to another gas station with 91 octane and bar/restaurant. Not bad food. On your way there are Indian ruins up to your right that are worth seeing if you want to take a short hike. It is well worth it. Great views up there and all concrete paths. There is some road construction way beyond this point but not sure. It may all be done but soneone at the store or gas stations can tell you for sure. You can go in most of the camping grounds around the lake and use the restrooms. No bodybothers you.

Cops are bad on this road. They hide. Take your fuss busters. If you have those plates that block photo, take them off. The cops don't like them. If you give these cops ****, they will shoot you.

A little story: At the dock few years back some drunks were at the gas docks and a deputy dog cop wanted to give them a ticket for something? They tried to get in there fast bass boat and take off. The deputy dog pulled the shooter and shot 3 holes in this guys engine. Just a thought!

Another suggestion about meeting at the gas station would be to meet at the one just north of shea on 87. There is more room. The one on Shea is fairly small and tight getting in and out if it is busy.

Have fun. That road is a blast; lanes most of the way and you can see well in front and back of you. First time I hit 130 was on this road. :D :D

Here's a food tip if any of you make the trip via Globe. Make a left on 60 when 188 ends just west of Globe, follow it towards Show Low around the old downtown area, maybe 4-5 miles, and watch on your right for Chalo's. Outstanding authentic Mexican food at very reasonable prices. I never make a trip to Globe without giving Chalo's my business. This body knows groceries!

Fitz 02-11-2004 09:29 AM

My intel, who lives in Globe, and drives to work at the marina every day, says the road to Globe is fine. There is construction on the side sections but should have no problem as paved all the way into Globe. Later

mrpink 02-11-2004 06:20 PM

We have 5 cars confirmed. Last week the folks in PC thought a spaceship landed. They're gonna poop their pants when we all show up. "It's an invasion!!"

mikiec 02-11-2004 10:41 PM

Ok,

Could this be the 2004 Arizona version of Holister, CA.

Jim, do you have your trophy?

Ginny wants to know how many wives, girl friends are going?

Mike

mrpink 02-12-2004 05:55 AM

My wife is in. Is there champagne?

harley 02-12-2004 09:55 PM

I am not certain that i can keep up with you guys but if the weather is nice I am hoping to meet you all at Shea and beeline - my girlfriend would be with me --

jim

mikiec 02-12-2004 10:36 PM
