Just my $.02

Howdy!

Newbie here just chiming in a bit.

I am in the market for my next project and I have decided to do a Cobra (feel free to PM me your musings on what the "best" kit is). So I have been searching at the various Kit builders and was seriously considering Superformance. In doing so, something struck me: if all I am doing is dropping an engine and tranni in, I am not really building the car, am I (IMHO). And isn't that what I wanted to do in the first place?

One LARGE reason for the "soft market" (again, IMHO) is the increase in number of kit builderss offering competitive priced kits. In short, built Cobras aren't selling as well 'cause I simply don't want one already built.

I want to build it myself.

the bottom line guys is that we're talking about a hobby that we love to death and our cars that are the best in the world according to us. Besides that we may not be wealthy but we certainly aren't hurting..Annnnnnnndddd, we're healthy too.. Have a Happy and Healthy New Year Everyone..Dave

Just an observation about a soft cobra market. I went over to the Cobra Country site and took a look. A great many of the cars were sold in November and December of 2006. Now, I dont know what they sold for, but I can't imagine with the asking prices that they were giving them away. Maybe the market isn't as soft as we all might think. I have no intention of selling mine (well maybe in the spring to fund the purchase of a brand new SPF) but its good to know that I can sell it for what I paid for it if I wanted to.

James,
I was waiting for someone to note this. "Soft Market" is what I generally refer to as Late December / Early January ;)

Hey Joe,

Will you buy my Superformance if I disassemble the whole thing so you can reassemble it yourself ? There would be an extra charge for the take-down though.

It's GONE.
I've never felt any remorse when selling a car until today. It was a car that I really loved to look at and drive. The new owner is a super guy and a retired CHIP from CA. He has a place in AZ so it was a smooth transaction.

Find parts and pieces for another HI Tech. I can't afford an original, of course, and the Hi Tech is as close as it gets other than a 4000 series alloy car or early Kirkham. I can't afford those either. Whatever the project, it should keep me busy for another year.

You can buy mine and add a few goodies to it?

Your car was crying like a lost cat trying to make it's way back to your house. I bet you are having bad dreams about this. Like giving up your pet dog!

Where does one find the "pieces" to build a Hi Tech? Aren't they long out of business?

decooney 01-09-2007 12:49 AM

Ugh..., I did that once. Did not take long to realize how much I missed it and had to have another to take its place as QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE! Nice Car by the way.

AMP in LA has the suspension pieces. Shelby American has parts, Mcclusky in CA has alum. panels, Cobra Restorers has lots of stuff etc.

Also beginning to wonder if Cobra market may be hitting a saturation point (just musing here) as a factor of those who would like one versus the number available. With qualifications, wondering what the mean age of a Cobra owner is and how this might be impacting market as well...ah well, mysteries of life and all that.

I would like to state the obvious. I am also looking and there are a lot of Cobra's (used)with all kinds of combinations available for sale. This alows the buyers to wait and really shop until either their dream combo comes up or something really close comes up that can be altered to that dream. Supply and demand. Personally I hope the mkt price stays up...

A quick check of Cobra Country this morning shows an amazing number of cars sold recently. Sold in the deadest time of the year. It is cold and Spring is a long way away. It looks like just about all the reasonably priced cars that have been on the market a few weeks have sold. The ones that look about 10Gs overpriced sit. However, amazingly a few cars that look overpriced have sold too.

Maybe there's nothing to get worked up about.

You get what you pay for

I am interested in this soft market talk since I don't have a Cobra but am looking for one. Is it realistic to get a Cobra that isn't junk for 25k? That's pretty much all I've got to invest, so if it isn't, I'll have to stop investigating until I'm a little better off.

I am just looking for a fun car, it doesn't need to be perfect. I will be driving it to work sometimes.

It would be nice to get something that isn't going to dump in price, though I suppose I'm already at the bottom of the market.

Any thoughts?

I will try to get to the Pavillions this weekend to see what's out there.

Steve

I think you can find a great FFR for that 25K. It may not be a "perfectionist" type of car, but there is something to be said for a car you can just beat the pi$$ out of and not feel the least bit guilty. :D

Sometimes I wish I had gone that route!

Good Luck !!

aldersonjames20 01-11-2007 07:56 PM

Have you thought about buying a kit that isn't finished, but complete as far as you just have to button up the driveline etc? You can get some smoking deals from people that have just had it and want the thing out of their garage. Pay somebody a couple grand to finish it the way you want it and the color you want, and presto, a customized Cobra to call your own. My budget started out at 28K when I started looking, and there were plenty out there. I ended up blowing that way out of the water with my SPF, but hey, its only my sons education....Good luck and hope to hear you reving something soon.

I'd seriously consider a small block le cheapo used FFR I could 'beat' on.

...if I could only get over that 'perky butt' issue... :D

Saw a 4" v-cut strip right behind the cockpit, yank that but down about 3", fill it with glass, bondo, repaint, and your ready to go!
