Lexan Windshield
Anybody have a Lexan windshield that I could take a look at?
Steve |
There's a guy over on ffcobra.com that had one made and is really happy. Here's some links to his posts about it and where you can get one. Price seems pretty good.

Sounds like he's pretty happy!
Thanks! |
Lexan will scratch pretty easily if you are not careful, here is the cleaning procedure:
http://www.tulsaenterprises.com/hints.html It doesn't make a lot of sense to go through the hassle when you already have such a light car... the glass windshield doesn't weigh much and is more durable in the long run... |
I was thinking about getting a few made so I didn't have to have my glass window replaced every few months...

Lexan
i made my own ,anyof the circle track race shops can get a peice for you its been so many years ago dont know the price but its worth looking into..have fun.WB:JEKYLHYDE

Mr. Pink's got one and you can't tell the difference. The big advantage, other than it never breaking again, is that it's 1/3 the price of glass.
If/when mine goes I'll probably do the same. |
Steven566, who is feeding you the BS about replacing the windshield every few months ? Out of the 35 + Cobras in Tucson I know of only one guy who has replaced his windshield. If windshield replacement was a big deal there would be a discount vendor selling them in Phoenix. It's not, there isn't, and don't worry about what might happen. John

Lexan
A large rock hit my windshield three years ago and chipped it. A local window shop told me it was to large to repair. I have not replaced it because it is on the passenger side. I might loss points at the car show but who cares. Can you buy tinted Lexan? If so I would replace mine with Lexan.
It a good chip. I got it when Coach and I drove 300 miles to give a kid with cancer a ride. On the way home a large truck with a load of gravel drop one onto my windshield. The chip reminds me of the kid and that day. Great memories. Cliff Jacobs had a great out look on life and death. He was a special person. I glad we got to met him. He died about a month later. After about 1000 miles of driving, I got a chip that turned into an hugh "X". I don't want to replace the windshield every 1000 miles. It's not just these cars, either. I bought a brand new Murano and cracked the fog light on the way home from the dealer.
The cobras are low to the ground which makes the windshield fairly vulnerable, and I drive the car a lot. I bought the car two months ago and I've put over 1300 miles on it. With all of the chip sealing in Arizona, I don't see how you guys aren't getting chipped windshields. Now you know of a guy in Phoenix that has had to replace his windshield, and I'll bet I'm not the only one.... Steve Quote:

Steve,
I noticed your broken windshield, but you left the picnic before I could get over and talk to you. Jim aka MrPink, the Black/red car that was there, has a lexan windshield. If you want to contact him go to the azcobras.com site and look up his email. There are 3 or 4 guys I know of that have replaced windshields in the past 6 years. If mine decides to go south I'll replace it with lexan. So far I have had only 2 or 3 very small chips. They were fixable. Mike |
I have gotton a few rock hits also. I just take it to the local car washer and their glass guys come running over. $15-30 bucks to fix it. No big deal. Watch out for those bowwwlllders falling out of trucks. Hell,,,,,,they will take your head off. Almost like getting hit by a bug going 130. Buzzes right up you nose! "bug humor"

Thanks Mike, I will talk to Mr.Pink. We would have liked to have stayed longer, but we had other commitments.
Thanks to everyone for all of the information, it's very helpful! Steve |
So...........Mr Pink, where do you get that windsheld?
|
Count me in as one guy that has lexan and is happy with the results and price.

I have had a Lexan screen for years.I bought a sheet from the local plastics shop (MGM PLastics San Marcos CA.) Took it home cut out the windshield and two side windwings and have been very happy. You can buy an untreated Lexan cheaper but scratches if you look at it.The scratch resistance Lexan is double the price but definately worth it.Very easy material to work with,it will not crack when you are cutting or drilling.

I have run a Lexan windshield on CSX 2401 for many years, the scratch resistant variety and it works wonderfully. I got fed up after breaking the original windshield on the Charlotte Motor Speedway at a SAAC convention (the body flexes a LOT when coming up the transistion onto the high bank in turn one. I then broke a VERY expensive exact replica of the original at the Atlanta Motor Speedway at another SAAC event, so that was the last straw. Lots of Nascar suppliers around here so it wasn't hard to come up with a piece of the stuff that they use in the race cars. Mine is tinted and has not scratched over the last 10 years.

Bought one from Pro Glass and it is already cut to size for Cobra's. Put it in yesterday and all seems well. It is slightly thinner and i would recommend getting new thicker rubber seal. Silicon seal works fine Jerry in Flagstaff
