Really strange!
I've had several occassions over the years where vehicles would not start. I now have a first. A car that won't shut off. I turn the key and the car keeps running. I pull the plug from the back of the ignition switch and the car keeps running. I'm presuming that there is a short in the inginition wiring somewhere. All I need to do is find it. WEIRD!

Check ignition switch. I am on my 3rd.

Bob, I pull the wiring away from the ignition switch and the car keeps running. There has to be a short in the wiring somewhere.

Hey Dan,
I bet you have a 1 wire alternator system with a MSD ignition. Just the MSD will do it and they call it run on. A diode ($0.80) placed on the wire to the alt. will stop this problem and it is all explained on MSD web link. Call me if you have trouble finding it. Jeff C

I had the same issue a couple of years ago. After checking all of the above out, I found.......................a short under the dash!

NO MSD box. No single wire alternator.. Standard ford dual points and old fashion voltage regulator. THat's why I think there is a short in the wiring.

Dan,
If by any chance you are using the 60's style Ford starter relay with wires on both of the small post, that can cause this problem. The "second" wire which was brown was a 12volt ignition coil feed wire for 12 volts in the start position only. I have seen the relay fail to open this circuit when the ignition returns from the start position to run. Though not likely you problem, you can check this by removing the wire to see if the engine shuts off. Good luck---Ron

The same thing happened to me on my first fire-up. Pink had to yank the coil wire to get it to shut off. It's basically the alternator in a feedback loop keeping the juice going but it's been so long I can't remember what I had crossed up.

Darn Dan,
You started this thread 3 days ago. You mean the car has been running all this time and you hadn't yanked the coil wire? :D
There are some very good suggestions in the previous posts and one of them should be your problem. I had the opposite as I couldn't keep my car running for lack of gas money.

Well, Ahren from Ultimate Automotive came over this afternoon and spent the better part of the afternoon and evening trying to figure out what was wrong. I'm not sure we ever figured it out, but he rewired it. The entire ignition system. It runs fine now. As usual, he did a good job.

You could get a job in the computer industry. I don't know what's wrong so I just reinstalled the OS.
