Why aren't all questions this easy to answer?
I have my car in the shop for a general look-over and Charlie says to me on the phone, "I had your engine on the computer and found that with the throttle to the floor you're only getting about 80% throttle, would you like me to fix that? It should get you another 75 to 100 hp and take about a half hour of labor."
Umm, let me think... |
just what you need. More horsepower... I presume you told him yes?
|
Darned mechanics, always trying to run up the bill by promising things like extra horsepower, better shifting, those little scented trees, etc.....
So, did you agree to the work? ;) |

Good job sandy, never enough hp!!!

Time to find a new mechanic IMHO. Shouldn't take more than 30 seconds to adjust throttle, and 75 -100 is way over exaggerated. Besides the only time you might notice any difference is at WOT. Hope he did this for free......

You should stay out of the conversation if you aren't involved or know the particulars of what is going on. Charlie (the mechanic he is referring to) has built several of our cars in the last 2-3 years here in Arizona and I don't know of a more honest person. I trust him implicitly with my car and I know Sandy does as well. I happen to have the same engine Sandy does and can personally attest to when our cars were new and the engines (the first 5 to come out of Roush for this motor) were getting sorted out, it only took a few tweaks on the computer in the right hands with the FI system to greatly increase the horsepower we were getting at the time. These are not your normal garden variety small or big block with a carb.
On top of it the shop he is at currently (Hot Rods by Dean) has does excellent work on my CSX as well as the superformance I owned in the past and the rates were much more reasonable than other shops I have talked to. I am sorry to rant but it irks me for people to stick their nose in where is doesn't belong or where they don't know the rest of the story. Sandy, i am sure you will put the horsepower to good use!!:) Ron |
Charlie also reset my throttle linkage so the NOS hits right at WOT and the rear barrels are open all the way. My tinkering had screwed up a bit. Like it does every time I touch the carb. LOL.

Maybe you should put this in a private mail if you don't want replies, that way your wheaties won't get PI$$ED on......
|
Sounds like someone needs to meet a real mechanic and/or get a real motor.. I'd be very shy about anyone who said that they could optimize my linkage in under 30 seconds.
|
It ain't rocket science... and as far as motors go.... bring it.
|
BTW - I doubt it's a 30 second job. The SPF has a couple of different adjustments and you're also dealing with fuel injection. The guy probably charges $100 hr, so $50 to get it right...no big deal and certainly not grounds for firing the mechanic.
|
Yup I trust Charlie completely. He downloaded a bunch of data from the EEC and uploaded it to the Roush engineers in Levonia for analysis. The problem I had that caused me to bring the car in is that it was having a minor issue of intermittent difficulty falling into a nice idle. When coming off speed it would sometimes fall thru the target idle speed for a few seconds then recover to the programmed idle speed and eventually idle nicely. Evidently there are a couple of throttle bodies a bit out of balance plus perhaps a tweak to the IAC is in order and a throttle adjustment, among other things. This aint easy stuff because with EFI computers, sensors and fuel/air adjustment curves one thing will affect another which then affects another and before you know it you're digging a deep hole. It's tricky stuff. The engine is running great, I just want it perfect and that is the reason I took it to Charlie here in the Phoenix area.

__________________ Jack Zoera-sc7xxx - You don't think that this is dissin the mechanic? It is a public forum but I don't recall Sandy asking for anyones advice? It was a retorical question about whether or not he should do it.(assuming you know the meaning of the word retorical) If you think it takes 30 seconds to adjust the throttle of a fuel injected computer controlled $40000 motor, it tells me a lot about your mechanical ability. Not to mention that Roush fuel injection systems are proprietiry and any hack with a laptop aren't able to adjust them, it takes experience, skill and permission from Roush before you are even access the software. Sandy, becareful. With that extra HP you might go off the runway and into a field at the end of it.
If you do not need the extra HP you can give me some. :):) Mike |
You know, it was funny. The engine dyno'd pretty high at the factory and I was thinking I was kinda the man because it was so managable. We'll see I guess. Gotta keep squeezing a tennis ball to keep the hands in shape for the next time I drive with you guys though. They were cramping up from a death grip on the wheel while keeping up on that Route 66 run. :o

Maybe Sandy will need a big kiss from Jamo too! |
Guys, I sort of wonder if Hotfingers doesn't make a point. First 100 hp off a 20% thottle difference is incredible. I think you would have to be driving this car at WOT all the time to use it.
The other point I might add is this is a members open forum and is going to draw the attention of the other members. With this in mind I might would say Charlie must be a fine mechanic that he can do these things, but to the rest of us who know him NOT, he is a character in this thread. In general if you all have not noticed, we, as members, seem to come to the aid of any of our brethren when something sounds amiss. In this case I do believe Hotfingers was trying to shead his knowledge to help to understand this remarkable tallent in Charlie. I am not looking for someone else's Wheaties, but I think we can appreciate Charlie's talent and the fact that someone has pointing it out a bit more colorfully. :D :D |
