Default computer ? about RAM

I wanted to increase the RAM in my HP Pavilion N5415. It has 2 RAM slots but only came with one 256MB RAM chip installed so I have an open slot. HP says I can install up to a max of 512MB.

When searching for another (256MB PC-100 SO DIMM 144 pin) chip set I could not find anything in stock. They did have 2 with a little faster rating or (256MB PC-133 SO-DIMM 144 pin for laptop) at less than 1/2 price. Will they work? http://www.computermemoryoutlet.com/...415-memory.htm

The RAM I just removed was a 256MB PC-133 and not the PC-100 the HP website said would be installed. I then installed 2 new 256MB chips and booted system up but it would not open to the normal desk top screen and remained a dark screen. ???

Jim,
I did install 2 @ of the new chips. The one I removed was already a 133 but choose to install the new pair without luck.

If you go to www.crucial.com, there is a free scanner that will scan your PC and tell you exactly the type of RAM you require and then give you a price as well so that you can order it. We regularly use it to identify the correct RAM for client's PC's.

Paul,
That is a cool site, thanks. It appears I do have the correct RAM or same as already loaded and working. I will keep reading and looking for issues. Thanks Jeff C

Jeff, When was the last time you cleared your browsing memory or defraged your C drive?

Hey Dan,
I keep her pretty clean for speed reasons. I am a big fan of CCleaner , Cookie monster, RegCure etc.. plus I did a clean and burn with delete all but last couple of restore points and then the defrag just before attempting this.

easier answer, just get a 512 and scrap the 256 idea.
