Are they on or off?

OK Riddle me this ????? On your car
Regardless of lens color, the lights on the front of your car used for a turn indicator and parking lights. What is their correct name?_________

OK So now you are driving down the road at dusk and pull the light switch to the first click ..... are they on _________ Yes or NO

Now you pull the light switch all the way out. The headlights turn on ..yes
Are the running or park lights still on ____________ Yes or No

Without looking to prove it to yourself did you answer the running lights
on the front stayed on or did you know they go out when the headlights go on? They do turn off when the headlights are turned on. I lost the bet and I had to go look to prove it to myself. Whats your answer?

On or Off

The OLDER cars turned off the parking lights when the headlights were on. The NEWER cars have them on in either the parking light or the headlight mode. When it is really important is if one headlight is out...

JeffERy, my God man, get a life!

Tommy 08-23-2009 07:40 PM

Over on the 1953-67 portion of the Corvette Forum we older guys regularly see younger guys asking how to fix parking lights that turn off when the headlights turn on. As was mentioned earlier, we explain that that's how they worked back then.

mikiec 08-23-2009 07:57 PM

On the cobra.. I have 2 switches. One for the parking and dash lights, the other for the headlights.

This way I can have my cake and eat it.

Eating Cake

If you do both, you'll get fat.
Bill:LOL:

vettestr 08-23-2009 09:18 PM

I was sure they stayed on when the headlights were turned on but not so. All the cars that come to mind with running lights that stay on are late 60's and newer. Tommy noted 1967 and older Vettes did not have running light on so was it 1968 they changed?

Karlos, from your earlier input I'm guessing you know when they changed ! LMAO.

Danr55 08-23-2009 09:19 PM

Mine's newer.. it's a '66. THey stay on!

mikiec 08-23-2009 09:59 PM

Walking in the frozen food section you see alot of headlights on.

Mike

Karl Bebout 08-23-2009 10:15 PM

Jeff, I never really thought about whether the running lights were on at the same time as the headlights, or not. I was always much more worried about whurled peas or when I'd be getting my next BJ.

I remember that "parking lights" are just that...used for when the vehicle is parked so folks can see it. Parking lights "flash" when they become turn signals...now are they turn signal lights ? Parking lights also become "Emergency Flasher lights" when stuck along the road.
Wow! One thing I've always thought...Boats have "Running Lights" and a "Anchor Lights on the stern.
I've never heard of "Running Lights" on a motor vehicle other than a "Big Rig".
Maybe..the more lights the better.
Bill

Hey Bill,
Well I missed something in my tender childhood I guess. Running lights or park lights are synonymous for me. Always been a desert dog so not many nautical influences. I think it is more of a generational thing but swore they should be on with the headlights.

I got a call asking what they should check because their running lights would not stay on with a new build. I thought about it for a moment and had to go check my own car. I thought about all the cars I have had and they all had running lights that were on with the headlights. It caught me ..... I still think they should be on but I know NOW.

PS Karlos I hope ya got those basic life support needs handled.:D

Y-NOT 08-24-2009 04:04 PM

Lights On

If the lights are on, is anybody home?
Bill

Danr55 08-24-2009 04:24 PM

Bill, have you ever seen a boat run? Why do they have "running lights"? I've had lots of boats and never had any use for a light anchor. Why would you have a light anchor on a boat?

"you see the lights of red and green, you set your course and steer between".. Old sailors saying.. Never hear any old sailors say it exactly that way though..

Keep smiling.. it keeps you young.. well except for Classic.. and maybe Karl...Oh, and can't forget Broberg..

I realize this is only my third post, but I find this stuff fascinating.

Unfortunately my dimmer switch has been on for a few years and I'm a little confused what this has to do with BJ's or the frozen food aisle. I promise to think about it for while though, maybe it will come to me.

If not, I'll call Jeff.

Y-NOT 08-24-2009 07:31 PM

Car Nut,

When you get older, you may understand our logic.

vettestr 08-24-2009 07:46 PM

NO....don't call Jeff

Danr55 08-24-2009 08:33 PM

Who's going to call Jeff and what's he going to call him?
