Tires again

Hey guys....

I just got some newer tires from Dan. My fronts needed changing and now I'll change all 4. The tires on my cobra were only 4 years old, or so I thought.

I checked the dates on them and they were from 1999. Sat on the shelf for a few years. The ones I got from Dan are much newer. Thanks Dan.

Mike

You're welcome Mike.. It'll cost you though!

How do you read date codes on a tire?
I am wondering how old my tires are.

garry viohl 09-21-2009 10:19 PM

week then year
5209

After 2000 there are four digits that decode to week and year, before 2000 there are only three digits. Here is a good explanation:

Unsafe after 6 years

There was an earlier post on this forum with a link to a news commentary on the unsafe nature of tires over 6 years of age "from the date of manufacture", noting a high rate of spontaneous failure. There was a fairly stern warning that older new tires off the rack are dangerous and yet they're sold in stores all around the country. It's worth a look at your tires for the manufacturer's date and upgrading to newer ones if they're over six years of age no matter what their mileage, especially if there's "spirited" driving on your agenda.

Ride safely!

Interesting thread. I just went out to check the dates on my tires.

Here's a link regarding tire age from TireRack:

"Properly stored tires that are protected from the elements and not mounted on a wheel age very slowly before they are mounted and put into service.
Our experience has been that when properly stored and cared for, most street tires have a useful life in service of between six to ten years."

I know they are not really the favorite but I have a new pair of BFG off my CSX if anyone is interested in them. I would sell them cheap. $300 for the set of 4. Only 600 miles on them

Hi Ron,

I might be interested in your tires. What size are they?

Bill

csx4910 09-22-2009 04:52 PM

295/50/15 for the rear and 235/60/15 for the front I believe. I am picking them up fron the shop that installed the Avons tomorrow morning.

Good decision on the Avons!

Bill Dapuzzo 09-22-2009 06:00 PM

Hi Ron,
Need you to confirm the size of the rear tires. Can"t go any wider than 275 50R 15. Just won't fit.

Thanks,

Bill

Danr55 09-22-2009 07:12 PM

Bill, Do 255 x 60x 15 do you any good? I have three Goodyear Eagle GT II that size I need to get rid of.

Bill Dapuzzo 09-23-2009 08:54 AM

Hi Dan,

I would like to stick with the size of the tires I have now, but thanks anyway

Bill

I confirmed the rear tires are 295/60/15 so it looks like maybe they wont fit. What type of cbora do you have? These tires were on my csx but I also had a superformance that had the same size. If you only wanted the front I would sell for $150. Let me know
Thanks
Ron

Hi Dan,

I have a Factory 5(MK1) and was told that anything wider than a 275X50 R15 would not fit(rub against the shock) Does anybody know otherwise?

Bill

Maricopa 09-23-2009 12:56 PM

It's possible but if you don't have IRS you will have to raise the rear height a bit and if you have a 3-link you will have to 'shave' the connection on the right side.

Bill Dapuzzo 09-23-2009 01:28 PM

I don't have IRS and don't know if I have a 3-link. Also you lost me at "shaving the connection". I only know how to get into my car and go real fast.

mikiec 09-23-2009 01:40 PM

Bill,

The main difference between the 295x50x15 and 275x50x15 is about 1 inch in width and 1/2 inch in height. The 295's are the taller and wider ones. This is based on the BFG radial T/A's.

Most raise the ride height a little and then trim off some of the 2X3 frame to make them fit.

Mike

Maricopa 09-23-2009 01:48 PM

On the 3-link there's a little box where the panhard rod attaches to the axle. On 275s it's kinda close but on 295s it can rub the tire on hard turns. The cure is to trim and re-weld it.
