ok if you want a plastic torana

Alvin 08-06-2001 02:15 AM

what do you recommend??

750hp 08-06-2001 05:15 AM

Alvin,
A lot of people are very happy with their DRB Cobras. They have proven to be a pretty solid car, and with a bit of suspension tuning they can handle nicely on the racetracks.

They seem to be marketed towards the person that wants to build their own car for a reasonable price. The are often sold for less money than most other kits.

The DRB dealer network is the most established of any manufacturer in Australia.

They now offer a Jag IRS. The body is not particularly accurate as far as fine "authentic" details go, but the average Joe on the street would see a DRB drive past and think they've seen a genuine 427 Cobra. More cynical Cobra enthusiasts will comment on the fact that the fuel filler isn't even on the correct side of the car, and that you can't fit the big tyres that other kits can accomodate.

Get in contact with the Cobra Club in your state, and get out to an organised event. There you'll be able to see a few different manufacturers cars, and talk to the owners.

Some people want the finer details of a correctly detailed, period style 427 S/C Cobra. Others just want a sports car that looks like a Cobra for not too much money. There are a dozen manufacturers that fit in between the two extremes. What do you want in your Cobra?

thanks Craig for your advise. So for a good, cheap kit DRB is fine.
I dont want something over the top and cost a arm and a leg to run. :JEKYLHYDE

Alvin

I am in the same boat as you - I am looking into starting to make a cob in the next 12-18 months and have chatted to a few guys around the Gold Coast.

I have also looked at another builder called De-type, and they can supply a rolling kit for about $10000. Is this rather cheap? I believe the DRB is about $12000-13000.

As 750 said, depends on what you want, and I know I am not a classic car lover - I just want an inexpensive sports car, that I built myself - the build part I know I will love - the driving I know I will love too...... and how much fun can you have in a 1200kg 200kw V8 convertible? :JEKYLHYDE

Cheers,

Brett

Alvin 08-07-2001 06:48 AM

Hey Brett thanks for the reply.

What kit are you going for????

Alvin

Noooooo idea yet. I still have to get along to a meet at Sanctuary cove here one day, and have a good chat to some more owners (ie. bug the **** out of them) about the ups and downs of the different kits.

My ultimate goal is to build a cobra, then maybe move onto another 'glass bodied car maybe based on a Marco Mantis or BMW Z3 (roadster) - custom built. But thats in about 5 years :JEKYLHYDE

Cheers,

Brett

lets face it which ever kit you decide to go for its still only a replica and as long as you like/love it then thats all that really matters,at the end of the day build what you want!

Rob. Smith 02-20-2007 02:30 AM

$10000 cheap ? I stopped counting at $50000 three years ago and I'm still building ! If you're handy with tools and can do stuff...
Get it !

As a DRB owner I can tell you a heap of issues I have with the make, but at the end of the day it looks the part and as Craig say's the number of "uneducated" people still ask is it a REAL one!!!!

Downside................

Not a true dinky die looking Cobra - so what!

Battery in Footwell - Builder issue.

Modern dash (DRB 2000) - so what!

Suspension - Modifications definitely required!!!!

Door fit etc - builder issue maybe (I''m sure all Cobra doors drop in the end!)

Upside......................

It looks better than a Ferrari:D

Otherwise I'm happy and I tell you what there is not many sportscars where you feel better for just being in it! ALL love them:p

Alvin,
I dont know any different I am stoked with my DRB Big Rear tyres 295.50.15, not hard to find bits eg yes Torana front end and ford 9" diff,
You can custom the full filler to the the other side lets face it they are fibre glass its all changeable.
Keith Fackerall from KCF Rallysports at kipparing a great hand for information and advice maybe worth a call.

In the end if you decide to build your own sort your budget and go for it

Yep, PCC has got it right, all kits have issues, they're just different issues.

These cars are like our woman, some have a perky rear end, some have a droopy ar$e end. Some handle well, some "spin out" when pushed, but we love em anyways. ;).

You are already an owner of a DRB. Your probably in the best position to answer your own question.

This is actually a readlly old thread - I think Alvin started it before he had a car. So he must have decided they are OK after all!

Cheers.

Battery in the foot well ? My other cobra had that.(another owns it but I am building it) I just spent 6 hours relocating it to the boot. (my car didn't get any attention that day). I am worried that the glass floor is too thin. Time will tell.
