Coils

My Windsor was supplied with the standard Mustang coil and also a new aftermarket Bosch unit, which according to the box suits most Aussie 6's and V8s.
Any advice on the benefits of going with an MSD or similar coil/spark booster set up would be great.

A few pics of my car just back from the paintshop......dropped the engine in this morning:)

Very nice colour Greg! Did the guy at Labrador do it as well? He must be used to that reversing light design by now! I used an MSD coil from Summit, with new distributor and leads.

Those 'easy jacks will have to go for rego? I assume you are registering in NSW?

Merv

byroncobra 12-30-2009 08:25 PM

Thanks Bruce and Merv

Merv, I've got new leads and dizzy, did you look into the ignition controller from MSD?

I'm regoing in QLD as the 302 won't pass in NSW.

I think I still may have probs with the quickjacks in QLD.......anyone here on the forum know for sure?

Warwick suggested just turning them around so the hooks don't project outwards.

Maybe looking to borrow a couple of overriders if they're interchangeable for rego

boxhead 12-30-2009 08:34 PM

Just leave them off for rego.

NASSTY 12-30-2009 08:43 PM

What Boxhead said. Don't need them in Vic

Mando 12-30-2009 09:00 PM

Looks great Greg, must feel good to see all the bits and pieces going back on. Not that it makes any difference, but I never realized the top of the plenum sits so snugly into the bonnet cutout.

Regards.

byroncobra 12-30-2009 09:33 PM

Now there's an idea, leave the buggers off!

Mando, check out how close it is in this shot......about 5mm....hope it doesn't rub when the engine vibrates.

I had to get the painter to notch a piece out of the bonnet rib to fit the alternator as well.

I'm wondering if down the track when I go mass-flo and maybe throttle bodies, that i'll need a bigger scoop.

boxhead 12-30-2009 09:46 PM

You will probably find the Mass Flo is lower?

Merv and Sharon 12-30-2009 10:45 PM

I'll be able to tell you soon about the Mass-Flo. My motor sits lower Greg, as the top of the plenum is below the bonnet level - and doesn't extend into the scoop at all.

I didn't get an ignition controller from MSD. I did get a new TFI module with my distributor and I also renewed the throttle position sensor. The correct connections to the alternator were quite hard to find (mine were missing) but when I did it seemed to stop the heating that these connections are famous for.

I would either borrow some 'bumpers' or leave them off completely as others have said.

Merv

You could probably mill 5mm off the bottom of the plenum where it bolts to the manifold and mill 5mm off the manifold too and get some extra clearance.

Krait 12-31-2009 01:04 AM

Hi Greg,

Very nice mate. Looking forward to seeing some daylight photos.

Cheers

Rob. Smith 12-31-2009 02:38 AM

Yeah take the jack brackets off. I registered my car with no wind screen, no roll bar, no bumpers, no wipers etc. The peanut at the blue slip said I needed all of the above so I said that the car was OK and to to ring my engineer but he rang the RTA inspectors and they abused him and told him these things weren't needed.......the blue slip was issued. I had to bite my tongue to stop from laughing. ( I'd seen this happen before with a Mustang blue slip)

Merv and Sharon 12-31-2009 04:06 AM

On face value: It does seem strange that a car can be road registered without all those items. I can argue with traction control and similar technology, but a windscreen and wipers? These rules really do need national application and sensible outcomes.

byroncobra 12-31-2009 02:48 PM

Happy New Year :D:D

Yeah Merv, these rules are so inconsistent......how many Cobra owners have ever needed wipers.......driving in the rain, you've got to be kidding:eek:
Thanks for the info on the ignition

I wonder Rob if you'd get away with all those things off the car in QLD....crazy interstate inconsistency.

Krait, I'll roll it out once my steering rack is back in. It's getting nice new paint and d bushes.

Mike, i may need to machine a little as it's just occured to me that Murphys Law will apply when the screws holding the scoop on will be just over the top of the plenum where the clearance is at the minimum.

Merv and Sharon 12-31-2009 03:09 PM

Happy New Year also Greg! Driving in the rain - well I was yesterday and the day before. Just light rain and it goes over the top. Great fun. The wipers are necessary, however, in Queensland summer.

My car was built to the ADR specs...my engineer is a stickler for the rules and a challenger for their interpretation.

Merv and Sharon 01-04-2010 12:21 PM

I don't think anyone was saying anything different Rob. Just noting the inconsistency in how cars may be eventually registered in each State. On one hand there could be no windscreen and the other we may need stability control. Amazing variation. Any pics of yours now?

Merv
