Bonnet latches.

Hi guys, can anyone tell me what you used for bonnet latches to get through rego? At the moment I've got the normal pointy handles you would usually see on a Cobra!

Regards.

boxhead 04-02-2010 12:44 AM

My engineer did not question the use of standard (to Cobra) bonnet latches.
Have you asked him yet?
Or maybe you can apply for an exemption from the SA authorities?

If not then I have seen a version of these latches that has removable T handles?

Rob. Smith 04-02-2010 12:03 PM

I used a couple of electrical cabinet "spindles" They were almost flush with the bonnet and the hole was smaller than the cobra handles..I used a square socket key to operate them. The bezel is black also so the spectral gloss issue isn't there. I'm at work right now .I'll try to find them and post a pic. If I've still got them you can use them.

Mando 04-02-2010 10:58 PM

Dave, I haven't asked my engineer about running with the normal handles but I will next week. I'd love not having to play around with those latches.
Rob, thanks for the offer, I'll try with the engineer first and come back to you if that fails.

Regards.

No harm in asking, if he says no because it has not been done before then tell him to check with MVR in Darwin if he is looking for a precident.
I would have been approved with 4 ppint harness if they could have found one already done with them.

Mando 04-03-2010 06:00 AM

Dave, one of the guys on this site "ledge" got his Harrison regoed with 4 point harnesses about 2 years ago. I never understood how because I thought they needed to be "retractable".

Regards.

Mando

I wanted to run my bonnet without latches for a smoother look but their use came up in converstaion with my engineer.

He started to voice his concern for them as a protrusion until I pointed out that if they were going to be an issue in this respect, then the person was a nano-second from smashing themselves against the windscreen.

He had no way around the logic and had to agree that latches were really snot uch an issue. Nor should they be. In my view a protrusion is the first point of impact, such as quick jacks, but latches are well behind the nose and bonnet of the car, so there is already a serious situation if someone is going to strike them.

If you want to use them push your engineer in the same way.

Good luck.

Mando,

I have some pics coming which might help.

Hi Mando,

I purchased these flat key operated bonnet locks from our local Bunnings store in the Hardware section for $20 each.

Very neat Baz. Is it easy enough to get a finger under the bonnet edge to open it up? Having watched your build I wouldn't be surprised if you'd fitted a spring loaded stopper or something tricky like that.

Time will reveal all Sambo. Be patient old son.

Thanks for all the tips. Iv'e just got back home this afternoon so I'll try and contact my Engineer regarding the handles tomorrow using some of the arguments mentioned. If that fails I think I'll try Baz's bonnet latches from Bunnings.

Regards.

Negative mate.

It would appear that Bunnings NSW carry more stock than Bunnings Vic. Up the Blues. More information to come.

Yes but $20 bucks from Bunnings is a tad cheaper than bites $80

Mando 04-07-2010 01:47 AM

Ben,
I refuse to pay top dollar for anything else for my car that isn't going to stay on permanently.
