Should a crate motor come with Warranty?
I am buying an LS3 crate motor and the place does not provide warranty.
I know if one was bought from holden it would have warranty, but holden dont have them and if they did they would be a lot more.
Did you get a warranty with your crate motor?

I got 12 months with the L98 I bought from WASP. That's only on paper though... I imagine it would be pretty messy if something went bang within that period and they asked to see the ECU... non-std tune, etc.

That was basically what i was thinking. I dont think that i will have it registered in 12months time so very little driving will have taken place before it runs out. I guess its more the DOA that i am worried about.
They are a reputable speed shop in Sydney and the price ($8k) is fair for current availability. I was just a bit thrown when they said no warrantee. Apparently there is going to be a flood of LS3s on the market in about 12 months time but i cant wait that long.

Warranty
Hi Liam,
I also bought mine form WASP and received a 12 Month or 20,000k warranty ( from the time I received the Computer ) it was roughly 18 Months
after I got the donk.
Why dont you get a wrecked motor to mock up the fittment and purchase the dong when you are ready,,,, this is what I would do next time.
At the time I purchased my L76 there were very new so I had to bite teh bullet.
Good Luck

Hi Liam,
I bought a engine/gearbox from a wreck and the person I bought it from gave me a 6 month warranty. Problem is that it took me 12 months before I started it and registered etc, so warranty didnt come in to play.
Stiffys idea is probably the best.

Hey Zedn, here's the thing. You CAN NOT sell ANY NEW Product in Australia without giving it some sort of performance guarantee/warranty.
The only exception that I'm aware of is something sold at auction.
If no guarantee or warranty is given then the item automatically falls under the "Sale of Goods Act" which the majority of retailers are unware of.
Sale of Goods Act was in fact if then almost the 1st consumer legislation in the world, & is the reason manufactures give a warranty, because in broad terms it says 'with the exception of fair wear & tear it can't break down or fail during normal service ...ever !'
To be fair that's really taking a broad brush to it but it is what it is.
By offering a warranty or guarantee that circumvents the S.O.G Act which was what the intent of the ACT really is about-making manufactures & retailers responsible for what they sell & promoting better product quality.
Helps you stop buying a pig in poke!
It's a nice bit of info to know

Except eBay, which has Buyer Protection, that turns out to be Seller Protection. I got some damaged, unuseable goods and they 'found' in favour of the seller. Not to be recommended for Cobra parts!

Hi Rog,
I am aware of that requirement. It also says that if something is faulty when purchased you are entitled to a full refund regardless of shop policies. The only problem is that these guys are basically a specialist mechanic who i assume buy bulk lots from Holden or HSV and then resell or install in customers cars. They are not a retailer and technicaly these would be counted as second hand even though they are brand new.
As i said in my second post they are a reputable company and im sure if i went to start it in 3 months time when finally installed and there was a problem they would help me out.
I might just see if i can talk to the owner of the shop tomorrow and work something out.
Stiff,
You can actually buy plastic motors for mock up, i have seen these on American Hotrods (love that show) but from memory they were about $400 plus shipping when i researched it. I thought about this but i would rather spend that on the motor and the way its looking at the moment cheap crate motors are an endangered species.
WASP no longer sell crate motors, i spoke to them the other day and they said they just cant get them any more. He said Holden are not selling them as bulk lots anymore. Its the same everywhere, eagle auto parts are selling LS3s for $9900. Holmart has just received stock of some L98's that they did a special purchasing deal at the same time as Holden. They are selling these for $6380. Holmart were the ones that told me that there will likely be some LS3s in about 12 months when HSV change motors.
9 months ago LS3s were between $6-7k. Now out of about 6 places i phoned there were only 3 that had them and cheapest was 8k.

Rumor has it... Flood of ls3 on the market will be due to Holden/gm releasing their new DI engine to compete with fords coyote engine. Time will tell.
Cheers,

Dont fool yourself warranties are absolutely useless. The best warranty is one you ever have to use. So get references, do extensive research of what issues the product has had and then make your decision. At best warranties give you some to take legal action against, and the burden, the prep, is all on you. I have come to the relization buy used with no warranty, take the 40% you saved over new and fix any problems which may arise.

Zedn, give AllComm wreckers down here in Melbourne a call. He just wrecked a VZ Crewman and is expecting another one soon. Ask for Greg - great to deal with.

Im now the proud owner of an LS3! Just picked it up this morning.
Its one of the ex HSV that was replaced for the W427. Apparently they pulled them out after they rolled of the production line and replaced them with the LS7. Been sitting in the crate for about 12 months waiting for a new home.
Very exciting to have a brand new motor. If i can get the GTS tune, should produce an easy 325kw ATFW in stock form. The motor has everything except throttle body and includes the clutch.
Another step closer!!

Yeah i have seen those, but do they need the FAST manifold to go with them? Also not sure what effect that would have on the tune for emmissions. Its big bucks for the whole set up and i would probably be best to look at cams first.
Mind you, looking at whats around, i will probably go with an aftermarket TB as they are the same price and most flow better than stock. I think i will have to switch to cable if i go down that route. I am going to keep an eye on the LS1 forum.
