Modena, any idea what that Harrop setup would cost?
Edit: found it. They have a couple of product pages and this one has the price. Lotsa money for only around 20kW - looks the business though! http://www.harrop.com.au/root_folder..._standard.html |
Cobra = Ford Engine (No other choice) want to put a Chevy in it then buy a Grand Sport!
|
I've gone the LS7 route, its such a proven performer now and with the OZ Dollar so strong and the general financial condition in the U.S. there are great deals to be had, I've got mine on the way DToD for $A15,127 , includes ecu, harness kit, accessory package (excluding AC), freight and about 500 other little import charges. Dont just email, ring them, they are ready to deal, i bought mine through "crateenginedepot.com" its due here in oz 4/11.

I've always been a Ford motor or it's nothing sort of guy but if I was starting my build today I'd be using the LS7. I'd have 8 throttlebodies installed and relocate the coils. There is a guy in WA that put an LS7 into his brand new black Superformance that looks fantastic even without the throttlebodies. Good luck, great choice.

The sound of Paul's ( The guy in WA ) Cobra is brilliant...
I play this clip regularly....... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY2EYgsFXf8 keeps me moving forward, although very slowly, to hearing, the same sound every day when I start mine up. Cheers Paul......Good job. Warren |
And,
Another clip of the same car once it was all completed....extra roll bars, and engine covers changed to "Cobra 427" etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...notation_77304 Hot Car ! |
Here is how a Cobra is suppose to sound..........big block Ford!

gsharapa - BBF would be nice, but unfortunately not an option... Local authorities have killed it down here. :(
Wazza - Originally, I never considered anything other than a ford in a Cobra... but when I first saw Paul's LS7 SPF by "marksworkshop" sometime ago, I had a change of opinion about what DNA goes under the bonnet. I was all set to bite the bullet on an LS7... then what do you know, the Coyote reared its ugly head, hence this thread. Given the choice Mando's 347 build looks the part. Love those build picks Mando, you have put together one fantastic looking ride. Sambo - Sound advice! I've decided, I'm 100% sure that I "maybe" want to see an 8-stack injection (or perhaps a SC) for that retro look under the bonnet... %/ Modena - that cross flow system looks awesome... that would look the part in a cobra. Currently Poll shows LS7 in front at this stage with a vote ratio of about 5:1 Thanks Anth |
Hi guys,
I'm obviously biased as I chose a LS7 - have never regretted it - in fact the LS7 has far exceeded my expectations...It's a great motor and I think a perfect match for a Cobra...just over 5000 kms and it still puts a huge smile on my face every time I start her up!....You can drive it as sedately as you like, and when the mood and conditions allow a more spirited experience, it will deliver as much punch in the middle of your back as I personally think most people could ever want or handle! We all know the whole GM vs Ford argument and most cobra owners I have met would probably follow their hearts and have a nice Ford BB in their Cobras if it was a legal option in Aust...but it's not (well not without running LPG), so were put into a position of having to make a judgement call... In the US, it's a different story, but I think here in Aust, it doesn't really matter - the essence of Cobra ownership is about living a dream and through Cobra ownership, I've met an absolute great bunch of guys with Ford small blocks, Ford quad cams, various GM LS series motors, Toyota quad cam V8's all living their dream and having a ball! My view is to buy whatever motor scratches your itch and allows you to live the dream! Regards....Paul |

My spf has 428cj, nice engine, makes all the right sounds but if i was building one now would proly go with 331 or the new twincam Ford,
Just a Ford man can't help it, but have had lots of GM cars also. I love my SPF with BB Ford but the fuel milage could be better. marvin |
Still yet to see a coyote in the flesh but it does look like an awesome motor on paper. When you go away from the 289's and 427's what's original anyway. GM is good value hp per $ but the coyote would scratch my itch if I were building again. Coyote V8 $6,500, ECU and pedal harness $1,500 Supercharger $5,900 Hello 750hp all plug and play and 50 state smog legal so I couldn't see an issue with putting it over the pits in Australia.
It's great not having to worry about converting the $ now too. http://www.fordracingpartsdirect.com/ |
To me this would have been an easy decision before
the Coyote came out. If I lived in Australia then the LSX's would have gotten the nod. But now after doing a bunch of reading about this Coyote I would seriously consider it. I saw a dyno sheet for a 32V 4.6 with a supercharger register 690 HP to the rear wheels. That's not a typo. I also have a good friend who has been with Ford engine development for 33yrs. He says we ain't seen nothing yet. He said the Coyote is worth way more power than people know. There is new stuff being built as I write this. So we shall see. Hersh:) |

If I was building now it would be the Coyote. I have been reading the US Road and Track report on the new Mustang. Very impressive! Ole' Shel is smiling.

You are absolutely right Hersh, 690 to the tire for the "old ModMotor" is not a big deal. They can reliably produce over 800 HP at the rear tire with extraordinary street manners and mileage in the mid 20's (they also start easily on cold mornings). They new Coyote engine is basically the old ModMotor after Ford brushed its teeth and combed its hair. The Coyote heads flow spectacular numbers on both the intakes and the exhaust. It is worthwhile remembering that this engine produces the same power from 299/300 inches naturally aspirated as the 03/04 Terminators did off the showroom floor with an Eaton blower from 281 inches - and at essentially the same engine speed. Put a Whipple or KB on the Coyote (or a 4.6) and it gives new meaning to the old phrase "lightning in a bottle"! BTW you don't have to do any bracketry engineering or blower drive engineering for the ModMotor. Ford has the parts ready made sitting on the shelf. A Ford Dealership in Minnesota will sell you parts at 10% over dealer cost. Here is their website => Tousley Ford A nice side benefit of this engine choice is it is essentially the same size as a 427 SOHC but only weighs about 450 lbs dressed, so the front of the car is not only light but when you open the bonnet the eye candy is stunning. Here is a picture of a blown ModMotor http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d..._GT_Engine.jpg The supercharged Coyote's are just around the corner. Ed p.s. for our brothers in OZ (who probably already know) the 750/800 RWHP translates into 550/600 KW at the tire. |

Ed,
Nice post. I made up my mind a long time ago that I will use a Mod motor. I can see less to be done to make it even stronger for turbo or supercharging. I prefer superchargers. I have a friend that has the terminator supercharged and I cannot stop thinking about how that thing pulls. The torque levels at 5800 RPM's which is unbelievable but I saw it and felt it. Most engines quit around 5200 RPM's To me this is the wave of the future for Normally aspirated engines. I love the LS engines but they are at their limit as far as I can see. Push it any more and longevity is compromised. The mod motor has more moving parts but those parts take a load off singletary operative parts doing more than on thing.:D Oh yeah, The mileage is incredible for a performance engine as well. Hersh:) |
