LS7 or Coyote?
OK... Time to Rumble!
I'm not looking for an old fashion Red corner vs Blue corner stoush. I don't have any brand prejudice, just engineering prejudice, and the reality is neither engine belongs be under the bonnet of a Cobra ahead of the other. So, Please keep all punches above the belt. ;) All things being equal, which engine would you put in your Cobra considering we can't use old school engines. Or... which is the better engine & why? |
For my 2c worth read on....
LS7 - 7 litres. 505hp 500ft/lbs standard! lot more compact engine. Dry sump system if ur considering racing... Standard! Only about 5,000 tuning shops across australia that can tune it.... 650 hp ish with a moderate tune..... good idea for a hassle free 500hp.. Coyote - 5 litres. New engine - unknown. about 400hp standard. not so compact in its dimensions. not sure who can tune them? I am guessing with an aftermarket computer you could tune it but it does have variable cam timing = headache unless you know what you are doing... Does have a supercharger option from the states that will take up to 750hp i believe..... |

I doubt rego would be an issue with either.
Advantage of the LS7 also is that they have been around a while so there is lots of info around on them, bolt on bits and pieces will be cheaper and more readily available, also there are probably a lot of interchangeable parts with the LS2 and LS3 so i imagine things like water pumps, starter motors etc would be cheaper and easier to get. Im not 100% sure on cost, but i think the LS7 will be nearly twice the price so you could have a very serious modified coyote for the same price. Wasnt someone saying the coyote was US$6k? When i bought my LS3 a couple of months ago the LS7 was around $20k (i paid $7950 for the LS3). Probably the LS3 or LS2 is a more realistic comparison than LS7. |
OOhhhh, we have to worry about paying for it? :D

You don't have to go for a genuine GM factory crate motor when it comes to the LSX engine. There are plenty of shops now building complete engine packages for very reasonable money.
A shop I've had some dealings with do an LSX 454 short motor for $6K and a complete long motor for just over $10K. You have the option of the super strong LSX iron block or the LS7 aluminum block (a 440cube version). The long block motor comes with CNC ported LS7 cylinder heads. This motor would make some serious mumbo. Cheers |
I'm a huge fan of the LS7..
I read a ton of info on it before I bought one for the new car, and I just couldn't find any negative comments about it. I also thought it would be cool to have a 427 C.I. under the bonnet. Those engines that Aussie Mike speaks of sound pretty cool too. All that aside.... The Coyote is also an awesome bit of kit..... You're on a winner either way. |
IMHO once you go away from a windsor it does not matter what you put in the car.....When emissions turned nasty for awhile I had no problems accepting that I may need to use an LS motor in my GT40 but that has all gone away now.
My next car which should be an Ultima will have LS7 power. |
Motors
Here we go again........
Why do people that dont have either start these threads...... too much internet, not enough money..... The LS donks are to die for, Old Ford stuff is great but OLD and exy to modify. Coyote is the 2nd generation pretend LS motor............ IMO a V8 IS A V8......... BTW Wazza great MC'ING at the nats, ALMOST want to get married just to have you as the MC......:3DSMILE::3DSMILE: Go the Rat Roasters..........:LOL::LOL: STIFFY |
I also didn't really care as to Ford or GM, just how good the engine is.
I went for a LS3 and shoved a supercharger on the top. It will give more power then the LS7 (LS7 is standard form) and the motor is strong enough in standard form to handle the forced induction. I can change rods/pistons/cams/rocker ratio's etc.... and get even more, but it will have enough in standard form with little tuning. Total cost was close to the LS7 but when you open the bonnet and see the red supercharger there, it looks pretty impressive and the sound :3DSMILE: Car is not far away from be driven, Monday is the day weather permitting where ABS and other things will be checked. There was no way that I was not having ABS on my Cobra with a lot of opwer by the way. |
Dimis, the LS motors are a no brainer but if you have blue blood and want something original, in true Shelby spirit, then a coyote makes sense too. Picture the moment when you pop the bonnet... what do you see?

Bet with your heart - go Coyote and have less options. Bet with your wallet - Go LSX and go nuts. Either way you will be happy. My stock LS1 with 327 rwhp can still give me a scare! Ben |
I, personally, would opt for the LS7. I currently have an all aluminum 509 with more torque that I care for but it wasn't planned. The LS7 future options are what would sell it for me. For my application it would be my personal choice.

This Yank votes for the LS7.
I have one in my 07 Z06 and with tune, headers and CAI it puts 509 @ the tires. The fit would be much easier too, not to mention the great weight savings. |

http://www.harrop.com.au/site_resour...image/main.jpg sadly my budget will probably only go to an LS2, or 3 if I'm lucky. |
LS7. I have seen some real nice combos with this motor in offroad cars (very popular where I live). I still don't like the idea of one in a Cobra, but I don't like the Coyote either. The LS7 wins IMO.

A lovely motor! But in a Cobra ... we now have a new choice! :JEKYLHYDE
