Tyres - general feedback and opionions
Hi guys,
Well this is just a start for some feedback and opionions about tyres. The use will be mainly for street... and yes I enjoy driving with a quality tyre. I am looking for some bigger tires for my harrison. Currently running 235 45 17 and 265 40 17 Yokohama AVS. Awesome tires and I have no complaints however time is comming to go bigger to fill these guards. I have used many different tires in the past however looking for any feedback that you may wish to comment on. I am planning to go to 245 45 17 and 285 40 17. I know that you can get 315 35 in the rear however I would expect that this would depend on the brand as the pic below is a comparrision of 315 35 17 for a Sumitomo and a Goodyear eagle show is the size difference. Happy for any feedback from other harrison owners and their setup. Has anyone used Continental Extreme Contact? Thanks in advance for your comments. I have the Conti's on my Audi, and they're very good - so good that I renewed them when the first batch wore out even though there were cheaper options.

What are your rim sizes?( Widths)

Leroy, I beleive the tyre width (ie 315) relates to the tyre being on a particular size rim not on its own. I would expect if you put both those 315 tyres on a 10" rim they would be the same width as the bead will blow out to seal on the rim. I have the sumitomo on an 11" rim and they measure about 313mm. The shape of the wall will make a difference from that angle as the actual tread width may vary, but the width of the tyre is the width for guard clearance.

Currently have 8 1/2 front and 9 rear. I am looking for OZ wheel to increase the rear to 10 and change the offset on the front for a bit more dish. I know that the 315 Sumitomo will fit on a 10 and will have clearance (i have done measurements for this) however do not know much about them, this is why I was leaning to a continental 285. Do you guys have max rim sizes up there?
In NSW, the RTA have a document that specifies rim sizes based on vehicle weight. For a cobra, the max rim size is 8inch due to being under 1200kgs. Apparently its due to aquaplaning. Im not sure if they actually enforce it though as there have been a lot of cars with wider rims (including factory cars) registered since its release. |
The 315 is not a good fit on a 10" rim in my opinion. The sidewall is definitely pulled in and I reckon you loose some tread footprint from this. It's an ideal fit on an 11" rim.

I have Kuhmo KU36 315/35 R17 on 10.5" rims. Here's a photo of them. The tyres are pretty good from what I read on forums.

Interesting to note the difference in rear wheel arch flares between the 2 different bodies.
I hear good things about the Kumho KU36 as well. A set will be on my shopping list soon. Cheers |

I have Kumho 285/40/17's on the rear and 255/50/17's on the front. On my Harrison they fill the guard nicely with a similar gap from the lip of the guard to the top of the front and back tyre. Well after 5100kls driving in heat (39 degrees) rain (110mm) course blue metal highway and rough potholed highway, I can report I like em. In the rain I never had an aqua planning concern (although some "puddles" where so big that the water came off the front of car and over windscreen) and I was driving at 100 - 110kph. I have run Goodyears before but just recently purchased the Vredestein Ultrac Sessanta. What an awesome tire. Below is a few forums that review them if you are interested.
