17" or 18"

Hi Folks, in around about sort of way, went pricing some brakes today for the CR, had decided on AP Brakes, but all is not well with the intended 17" wheels, the front has VZ Knuckles and Hubs, all good, AP CP5200 4 pots and 330mm DBA5000 discs, the CR has VE Knuckles and Hubs on the rear however, other than standard brakes, there is no combination of calipers or discs that fit aparently due to the knuckle design, unless i fit 18" rims, then i can fit 350mm discs and cp7607 calipers,
Thers is a racing 336mm disc and caliper setup that will fit, but no handbrake, used on the racing v8 utes apparently.

so, has anybody got other solutions than keep with standard,
any body got 18" rims on the COB, have you got pics ?

Hi Dave
VZ and VE have differnt size studs, so maybe try and match them. I went for 18" mainly because Bonspeed had a set of centers ready to go, beware though with 18" there is less options if you go 315 or bigger and want to have same tread patternfront and rear. Also dont go off Ians specs when you get the rims made as you can go 11" on the rear and the yanks dont understand his measurements.
Also opt for the power steering, I was told I wont need it but now that my old style chassis is going I definatly need it!!!

I have 18s on my CR. Pics on my gallery.

Now looking for some more cheap 18s to put some R spec tyres on!

Hi Dave, i have 17' on mine with the stock Vz Front and VE rear brakes but with Racebrakes high coefficient pads.

I find that i have to set my bias a fair way to the front to stop the rears locking up first. One day am planning on upgrading the front brake to AP disc/calipers. I didnt figure on doing the rears as it seems they have enough stopping power. Unless of course you'd like to do it for the cool look.

I must admit I havent been on the track yet with my stock brakes to see how they would fair so cant comment on their durability. I am planning to do so at Shelbyfest in march.

But so far under quite a few hard stops they dont seem to get too warm.

Have fun

Hi Dave,

If you go bigger rims, you cant put as wider tyre on the same width rim. I.e 8" wide 17" rims will take a wider tyre than 8" wide 18" rims. 17" will also handle better and provide better traction.

Have you looked at Wilwood? They have a huge range and you would probably get them cheaper than AP. They have all the specs on their website, you just need to measure them up.

SPF have 18" rims as an option.
they look terrific...
NB: they also come "not polished" if you prefer...

http://www.hillbankmotorsports.com/s...18-wheels.html

See them on a car...
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Super...-/270517687970

I believe Cameron formerley "Cobra 88" ran these on his SPF with great success.

Not sure if they'd fit on a CR, but looked good on an SPF.

Best wishes

Willwood brakes aren't smiled upon by Australian design rules...apparently they don't have weather seals..they are designed for racing so they are regularly checked after each run ?
The yanks don't seem to mind.

Zedn 12-02-2010 04:29 AM

The dust seal thing depends on the state.

There is no actual requirements in the ADR. There was a clubby who recently started a thread on the ozclubbies forum worried because he had a QLD inspection booked in and he thought they wouldnt pass. Anyway after contacting wilwood and stressing for a few days, he went for inspection and the inspector told him how nice they look.

All good info, thanks guys, 17" rims look about the right size to me, what about Brembo, any body got experience, apparently they have a 4 pot that can mount on a 324mm disc that wont interfere with the upright.

Gregg, yeah was going for the cool factor, might have to coat some calipers to match.

Beejay, blown away by your pics, cob looks spectacular,

I used Brembos off an Evo VIII igot from ebay in the US. Cost me $700 landed here. Have them on 343mm front and 315mm rear rotors. I have the torana based suspension though so i dont have the knuckle problem. They do fit over Boyd Coddington 17" smoothies..... The brembos work really well!

Have a look at Harrop too http://www.harrop.com.au

DaveW 12-04-2010 04:58 PM

Looks like Ozwheels has a web site now, http://www.ozwheelaustralia.com.au/

Modena, i hadnt really considered Harrop, good suggestion, looks like they have a few alternatives for 17" brake setups, interesting is thier ability to use a 343mm disc, every body else can only fit 330mm with own brand calipers.

DaveW 12-12-2010 10:44 PM

OK, i think i've got the solution, been through Alcon, Harrop, Brembo, Wilwood, and the guys at compfriction look like they have the best solution which theoretically should fit in some Ozwheel 17" HB's
6 piston AP caliper on a DBA5000 343x32 front disc, and a 4 piston AP caliper on a Harrop 2 piece premium 343mm rear disc which will keep any custom bits to a minimum (caliper mountings only),

Does any body have a profile drawing of the OZwheel 17x8 and 17x10's ...or could take some internal measurements of the diameter adjacent to the mounting face and at the bead, i believe from Dave at Ozwheels the rims taper out towards the bead from the center mounting flange, but he didn't have any numbers he could quickly bring to hand.

Gregg, could i impose on you for a quick measurement, as i'm intending to get the same wheels.

regards

Dave

Hi Dave,

I dont mind taking some measurements, althought it might not happen for a week or so due to XMAS and work committments.

I am assuming you mean inside measurements i.e. remove wheel etc.

Maybe I'll take a photo and mark up the photo with measurements then you can tell me if there are any others you need.

Yep, thanks Gregg, that would be great, when you do, could you also confirm the offset, Ozwheels is adamant that Ian's spec for the front is 1/2" out, 5.5" vs 6" offset,

Thanks and regards
Dave

boxhead 12-12-2010 11:20 PM

Just make sure OzWheels are talking square chassis or round chassis car.
I think offsets may be slightly different.

no problems. BTW, I reckon my offsets are pretty well correct as I think my wheels/tyres etc site nicely in/under the guards.

Will measure front and back.

One thing that is very tight is the bolts on the perimeter of the rear wheels - they were interfering with my rear caliper and I had to grind them down. (two by two - took 4 hours)

Anyway will measure up and post soon.

DaveW 12-13-2010 01:21 AM

Hey Box, yes you are correct, there is different offsets between the square and round tube versions. I had confirmed this with them several times to make sure,

Thanks Gregg, i agree your wheels look perfectly placed, Dave at OZwheels told me he has made 5 sets of these for the VZ/VE version now, anyway, will get there.
Interesting point with the bolts, i wonder if that fact is why they are stating different offsets.

17"

I have Jaguar front suspension and have made my own knock off hubs which have the hub face about 20mm further inwards, brakes are AP 6 Pot CP5570 front and AP 4 Pot CP5100, both these calipers run the internal dust seals, running floating 330mm x 28mm rotors front and 295mm x 25.4mm rotors rear. I was going to put CP5200 on the rear but that was going to be overkill, this car will be lucky to be over 1000kgs when finished with its lightweight alloy/magnesium running gear etc.

Wheels are compomotive 17" x 12" rear and 17"x 10" front, I personally prefer 17" wheels maximum as larger diameter wheels dont cut it for me, 18" at a pinch, but I see street hoons with their larger 19" to 22" wheels and quite frankly the cars look stupid as if there is no tyre there, plus availability in 17" is okay!

DaveW 12-13-2010 02:04 PM

Hi Ant, would love to see some photos of your hubs, and caliper mountings, (and the rest of the car), The CR's look like they need a little more offset from the outside.
regards
Dave
