Will give it a try once I clear a path to the car - the shed is full of decking timber at the moment! So do I just walk into Jaycar and ask for a "3k ohm resistor" - simple as that? Are they directional?

Resistors are non directional.
I tried 1.1K, 2.2K and had 3.3K here too. Just cant reccall if 2.2 or 3.3 K was eventually used but remember it wasn't the 1.1K.
Jaycar will have a pack of 8 for 46 cents or so.
