270 Killer Wasps!
Another L98 has breathed life for the first time, fired up no worries after a few splutters. Thanks Sideshow for the loom & ECU. I was looking forward to my first drive down my driveway, but as mentioned in another post, there is not quite enough travel in the clutch, "The best laid plans........ "

Well done Peter, a major milestone!
Are you running Howard's (VDO) gauges? If so, have you managed to get the tacho running off the ECU yet?

The LS ecu only puts out 2 pulses per crank rev, or in other words the same as a 4cyl engine.
It would have had me stumped had Mike not told me!

Happy for you.
I found Sideshow worthwhile and his sidekick equally able to our challenge and it's good you did too. (he cant spell for sh^t either) but knows his stuff.
The first start is still fresh in my mind, good rush, good inspiration to keep on. Silences the blonde handbrake for a while too (did here).
Didn;t spot the clutch thread easy there, got a link please? you say travel issues, what pedals and M/C are you using. I ask because I have been further playing with my M/cyl setup today. Made an angled spacer for behind it previous but still stuffing around to save stress on the cylinder.

Back down south near Orange NSW I remember a farm that had a veeerrryy long driveway that was made of baby bum asphalt. The guy owned some schmick cars I am told. Feature was the sign upon entering the driveway, had 200 KMH welcoming sign, red circle and all.

Thanks guys, Merv the driveway is about 60 metres of gravel, do you reckon I could find second gear with my R32 diff? Paul, tacho is not working although wired in, I bought a "TPI Tech" 6 gauge set from the States, and it may be more suited to Neg. Coil inputs, I'll try Gavs 4cyl switch trick and see what happens. Justin (sideshow) has sent me a page on how to put a 3K resistor in the circuit which may help, I'll try that too.
The Master Cylinder is a 5/8" Toyota Hiace which fits nicely on top of the pedal box, and has about 30mm of travel, but there is not enough volume to do the job. I can start the car in gear, and it doesn't move, but take up is about a bees dick off the floor, I have put it in to be bored to 3/4", and that will give me 40% more volume.

Have you looked at if a Holden one will fit?

Boxhead, I don't know what a Holden one looks like, I hunted around under my comedy door dash to have a look and couldn't find it, but the Toyota one at the wreckers looked as if it would fit, is cast iron, and has the mount I wanted. I was going to put a "kit" in it anyway so I'll just get a bigger kit after the re-bore.

But if you rebore it larger, where are you going to source the larger piston from?
Because if you keep the standard sized piston in the larger bore I think it would be asking for a leak.
Does the Harrison master cylinder mount in the engine bay or is it inside the cabin?
I fitted a Willwood one (may be a beter option for you too) as the less "modified" parts you fit the easier it is when you need to replace something.

Valid point there.
If the toyota one takes your fancy and you only need that little extra have a look for 19 mm toyota cylinders. Nissan has a few 19mm also.
I found the wilwood not the cheapest but OK priced and came with different reservoirs and bits, but, the best bit is the ease of bleeding. All I did was fill the system and let it sit a while, then ran a 6 inch tube from the bleeder on the front of the M/cyl back into its own res. 5 minute job and no crawling around underneath.

Gav, my tacho is set to 4 cyl mode and it's still not registering anything.
Peter, any thoughts? See my post above.

Sambo, I used the VDO tacho on mine and had to put a 1k ohm resistor across a couple of the terminals on the back of the tacho to boost the 5v signal from the ECU to approx 9v from memory and that did the job. The resistor went from the power in 12v to the signal in from ECU. Hope that helps.... Cheers

Thanks Kyle, I wonder if the same applies to the L98? I'll check it out with the multimeter.

I had the same problem and looked at the signal from my LS1 ECU with an Oscilloscope and found it to be a 1 volt peak to peak square wave. I told Howards and they modified my VDO Tacho to suit. Tried the resistor pull up methed and that didnt seem to work.
Not sure about the later ECUs.

the 1K / 3K trick works on the later model ECU's (LS1,E38,E40)
make sure you have one end of the resistor onto ignition the other onto the tacho wire...
the 4CYL bit is only if the tacho output has not been adjusted in the ECU, but will make no difference if the tacho is not registering at all..
you can get the tacho modified to work but is rather costly compared to buying a 10cent resistor and fitting yourself.

Resistor,
I put the 3 K ohm resistor as suggested, and tacho is now working, certainly worth a try Paul, on your VDO.
