Seat Tracks - a quick question
So seat tracks - do I have to have them?
Because I am stuck for room I was planning on making my seat fixed and sized to suit me. Shorter people, if I let them drive, could be accomodated with a cushion insert behind their back. I had a look in the ADR's and do not see anywhere where it says seats must be adjustable. However, word on the (WA) street is it is required. Can anyone comment on this? Thanks |
You don't need no stinkin' seat tracks. I'm 6'2" and didn't want to look over the windscreen. So, I had to go to a thin racing shell with NO tracks; much happier.

I am not 100% sure on this, I would ask your engineer.
I "thought" they where required, so built some in on my car, but the engineer never checked it. |
Don't have them in my car or several past Cobras as it puts you lower in the car and much more room. In my case knowone is going to drive my cobra anyway so they are set for me which is all the way back and front tilted up a bit. Works great.

I was told that in Victoria (Australia, for the US posters here) we need seat tracks, the idea being that some adjustment is necessary to allow drivers of different heights to reach the pedals and drive the car safely. I haven't verified this 100% but it sounds pretty sensible to me, at least from an engineering perspective.

I remember some time back QT also required seat track/adjusters and that each track required a positive locking device. ie. Not locking on one slide only.
Dunno if there has been a change though. |

I'm pretty sure you will need an adjustable drivers seat (mine was checked) but you can have a fixed position passenger seat. |
Especially if the guy doing the testing at inspection time is vertically challenged !!!
My understanding is that it is a requirement here in WA. |

I'm not sure what setup you have with your tracks some have the same hole spacings on the seat as to the floor.....can you take them out after rego???

You can do anything you like after rego, insurance might be a different thing...

Im not sure about WA, but in the lovely state of NSW i wouldnt be doing it because the RTA would wont the brackets tested as the seats would be considered modified and no longer ADR compliant.

I was told in QLD that is was not needed and opted for the lower seat height. Engineer was happy with that when I was inspected. Check with your engineer.

Thanks for all the responses guys. I guess I will have to chat with my engineer to be sure. However, the ADR, whilst it states that all adjustment mechanisms must be locking, it does not say the adjustment mechanism has to be there.
Actually, this seems to be a common peculiarity of the ADR's. If you look at ADR11 for sun visors, it states the rules that apply if you have them. But where is the rule that says you have to fit them in the first place? Quote:
