Default Car sales over seas

Hi,

I wanted to ask a question about possibly selling my cobra over there. I sold a 1968 Camaro RS/SS I had to a gentleman over there but he saw it here and took care of the rest. Where would I begin if it is possible? Are there restrictions for a U.S. car being sold privately over there? If not, I see there is a facebook page for a cobra car club, that might be one source. Is there a main source that I could advertise in? I am just getting my feelers out. Thanks for any guidance I get. The car was just finished last year with a BBC and a 1996 corvette suspension.

A new US built cobra would be very difficult (impossible?) to register over here. The Camaro wasn't a problem because it was >30 years old.

Selling it here is one thing, but if we assume the buyer would want to have it registered, then the rules depend on which state this is attempted, but in brief your Cobra will be considered to be manufactured in the year you can prove it was finished. As it is under 30 years old it would have to be converted to RHD, and would have to comply with all ADR's and engineering regulations in exactly the same way as a Cobra that is built here.

At least that's the way I understand it!

It's complicated... but in a nut-shell, like tenrocca said, if less than 30 years old.... it is a nightmare!!!

Unless the purchase is choosing to either:
a) completely re-engineer the car.
b) just planing on a track car.

Also simply being "titled" over 30years old isn't good enough.
ie: can't build in 2010 and title '65. It wont work!

End of the day... purchase choice if he were to continue to buy.
While it really isn't your problem to advise him of these things, you'd certainly be doing him a favour by advising he looked into it.
After that, your conscience should rest clear.

All true... unless the purchaser was from Victoria, then they could opt for the following club permit scheme, if they meet the criteria.

Club permits : VicRoads

Like we said - it's very difficult.

All the new rules regarding importing cars are really stiff. This is probably due to the rash of crap Japanese hi-po imports (grey imports) a few years ago. Importing American stuff has become a victim of this bureaucratic s#it. Check every thing ...do the searches !

just speaking for Belgium ( which isn't that great market )

here it is almost impossible.... to get a recent "kit-car" road legal. Here they consider "oldtimers" title from ages above 25 years , which means you don't have to "prove" anything about the car as there are no resources to compare ....myself was looking for a Cobra but i ended there...as more recently they also refused cars as a "'67" Cobra with visual more then recent parts..... as brakes, engine etc.... problem is also you have to succeed tech inspection every year for a "classic" car or one time when you want to sell the car as a "oldtimer".... so it's a time-bomb under your investment .... and they change the rules !

Sorry , here it is ( no more ) accepted to have a "'80" build Cobra , registered as a "''69" one...and sure not kit-cars not lying about the build year ... they were not officialy imported that way...i know, alot of BS....

so i ended with buying a Detomaso Pantera GT5S... what i do NOT regret

The Aust Govt lists several ways to import a car into Australia. This is the condensed version. A Own and use a car overseas for 12 mths and you can bring it in as a private import. B If the car was built before 1989 and is not modified in any way and was not sold here. C. Certain listed cars can be brought in and modified to comply under the RAWS, or SEVS scheme. Interestingly the Backdraft roadster is listed on this scheme. Racing use only I presume. One other option is to remove the motor, gbox front and rear ends from the car, ship body and parts seperately in seperate shipments and items will be treated as parts by customs. Make your own enquiries regarding the particular car in question by contacting DOTARS in the Federal Govt befor you do anything. Good Luck as they are there to help!!!!!

I really appreciate all the information from everybody. I had a good experience when selling the Camaro so I thought I would inquire about the cobra. Plus you guys over there seem to appreicae a "kit" vehicle for just that, meaning because it has a chevy in it doesn't matter. I am trying to work on a few things so my decision to sell isn't final yet but close at this point. We'll see how it goes. Thanks again.....

Just left some technical advisors for club rego who have told me that all Street Rods that are registered on club permits will need to be fully engineered with braking tests etc. etc. It appears that they may even need engine emission testing done. Stand by..

Obviously original vehicles do not need to have all this done to go on club registration.

The scheme is now run through the Street Rod Centre in Castlemaine, Victoria.

The first car to go through this new scheme was a 1930 Ford Coupe with a V6 Commodore motor - this week.

So it is up and running for Street Rods. It appears that club rego will go the same way. That is
original cars can be registered as is. Anything else will need similar to the Street Rod Scheme.

So appears any replica will require just about everything done as they require to meet full rego - so the option of Club Rego will be the advantage of dollar savings each year, but then the limits of 90 days, log books and restricted to Victorian driving only - it appears!!!..

So maybe simpler to go full rego unless you particulary want club rego for the registration cost saving.

Yes but not just ANY Chevy.

The McLaren M8D/E Can Am cars of the early seventies had magnificent eight litre Donovan or Reynolds aluminium Chevy powerplants fed by Kinsler mechanical fuel injection. Anyone who could look at and listen to one of these glorious monsters without getting severely aroused was probably dead.

The M8D "batmobile" in original form is my all time favourite car.
