Default Tubular fuel-level sender

To help ensure a stable fuel-level reading I am going with a tubular marine-style fuel-level sender instead of float/arm type, details are here on my blog: Cobra Blog

Love the Cobra Blog Modena. Very professional. I wonder if a tubular sender would fit on to other tank insert 'top' fittings? Mine is Classic Instruments but I suspect it is the same bolt pattern.

I put a tubular fuel sender in mine and unfortunately the guage readings are still not as stable as I had hoped, also in my car with the sender just above the bottom of the tank it still took 20lts to register on the guage (85ltr tank) then was not linear from there. A friend recessed his into the bottom of the tank to overcome the high zero fuel level.
I am thinking of removing the tube sender and covering the inlet holes and only leaving a tiny opening so that the fuel cant move too quickly in and out of the sender.

kyle, are you using a VDO sender? Have you checked the resistance that the sender is putting out? It could be a gauge calibration problem.

Here's what mine looks like on the bottom, which is the only entry point for fuel into the sender.

Modena,
Yes, it is the VDO unit. I calibrated the guage and sender, but it takes a bit before the fuel picks the float up. I am going to cover both those holes and the fuel will get past the gaps in the tabs.

I'm with Merv, I love the blog and looking forward to seeing your progress. I've been giving some thought to starting a new build with the new chassis, I would expect it to take half the time and a lot less money!

Regards.

What new Chassis Mando?
Has the sight of Davew's chassis been too much to handle?

Yes Boxhead, since seeing that ridiculous chassis I can't sleep at night and would really like another go at the build. I had planned to restore a 69-70 Mustang 351 fastback using all modern running gear including new front and rear clips and 8 trumpet fuel injected motor, but this could wait.
We'll see how we go!

Regards.

We've been using tubular fuel senders for a while now and they have been working really well for us.

I think you might be onto something with the rate of fuel movement in and out of the sender. The ones we use only have approx. 10mm diameter tube. I have attached a photo.

Unfortunately we don't have any experience with the marine VDO ones.

In automater gauges they have 4 or 5 different resistances
In the gauges to suit different factory old and new USA cars
Vdo only have afew
U need a matching gauge and sender for it to read right
I would speak to an instrument guy maybe has had a circuit
Like maybe a capacitor or similar to slow the signal so fuel gauge
Doesn't move erratically
But I've never really had customers complain bout this issue
Main thing I see is mismatched sender and gauge
