Upgrading rear tyres and wheels
At the moment, I have two 315x35x17" Sumitomos on 10 1/2" x 17" Vintage Pin Drive rims which have only done 2,500 k's fitted to the rear of my Cobra. I am considering changing the look of my car to get a more beefy appearance in the rear wheel department by fitting 295x50Rx15" B.F. Goodrich Radial T/A 's tyres to new 10 1/2" x 15" Vintage Pin Drives.
I am seeking expressions of interest from anyone who might be interested in purchasing the two 315's on 17" Vintage Knock Offs for $1,000. That price is for the rim and tyre only and does not include the Adapters or Spinner Kit. Regards Baz |
That's a good way to go Baz. IMO, the 15" wheels will look great....very period correct, and as you say, "beefy". Worth doing.

Are you going for 15's for drag racing? Those TA's may not be the best choice. Maybe look at some drag radials. BF Goodrich make some with tread.

That's only a "flea's doodle" difference ! Aren't the "Middle numbers" ......e.g. 315/35/17...and 285/40/17... on all of the tyres sizes a "percentage" of the width ? i.e. 315 X 35% = 110.25mm 285 X 40% = 114.00mm Difference in "Wall Height" = 3.75mm ( 15/100ths of an inch ) Have I got this wrong ?? Are you still running round eith rego height suspension? Dropping it a couple of inches front and bsck will make the tyres fill the guards much better. Probably make it handle better too. Mine was pretty horrible with the suspension wound up both in looks and ride.
Just make sure your tyres clear the edges of the guards. From my memory of your build pics your wheel offsets put the tyres out near the lip. You wouldnt want one to rub and stuff up your nice paint. Thats one of the reasons i didnt paint mine before driving it. Ive found a few spots where the tyres rub and fixed them now. Cheers |

1/2" is going to be hard to pick as it's only 1/4" top and bottom. I think they will just appear to look bigger because they have a taller sidewall. The gap to the guards will be about the same.

The larger tyres will throw your speedo out Baz, along with the tune for your shift points in the auto.
