CSX cars in Australia??
Hi all
I have been contact by 'Historybuff' - Wally from California, regarding some photos and magazine articles on original Cobras that have reached our shores. I have a few photos taken in the USA here, along with Shelby memorabilia, but no photos or magazine articles. I have sent a message to 'Historybuff' advising him to watch this Thread if anyone can help him with photos of Australian Cobras with the CSX prefix or any magazine articles on them. Hope you are able to assist him in gathering or completing his files and history on the Australian cars. Bernie |
I have an old Custom Rodder magazine from the early 70's that has an article on an original cobra in Aus. I'll see if I can find it and scan it.
Cheers |
There was of course your original thread Bernie: http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/aust...australia.html
and lots about 3150 in various threads here. I have some old Classic Motor Sport mags with articles about Cobras but mostly they are not cars in Australia. |
Merv and Sharon
Thanks Merv I forgot about that. I opened his message on my iPad and just moved it straight to a Thread here. I have advised him that I have started a Thread on the Australian Forum. Hopefully he will come on here an let us know how we can help. I am digging around now looking for the last few Unique cars that have some articles on the Queensland and Victorian cars. Thanks Bernie. |
Aussie Mike
Yes looking around here now. Ned Scudder in San Diego would be my starting point with a list of cars here. Ned is very obliging. He is the keeper of the Registry of all cars and has a very comprehensive list of all cars. Yes hope we can help 'Historybuff' -Wally - with some magazines or photos. I am sure owners here would assist him also. It sounds like an interesting project he has taken on to identify cars that reached our shores. Bernie |
I think COB 6035 featured in the movie "Running from the guns"

Here is a famous Australian with some American geezer:

Rubbing shoulders with the famous.... I said "How about an autograph" He said" Yes sure' I said, " Ok who should I make it out to? " |
Below is the article scanned from the June-July 1974 issue of Custom Rodder.
Looks like an interesting car. Hopefully someone here can shed some more light on it's history. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...r_June1974.jpg I have to say the car looks great with no pipes and wire wheels. What a great stance and proportions. Cheers |
Thanks Mike. I have sent a PM message to 'historybuff' to get onto this page.

Good find Aussie --- went to school with Chris at Swan Hill Tech (vic.) -- his father had a motor museum at Lake Boga ('60s Vic.) --then moved to Gold Coast ('90s?) where that car was sold --it could be the one that JB has ?? A nice straight car and was red

Good to see what cobra history was like down under...
What about interviews of Shelby from back in day in Australian magazines? I think Shelby raced there once, or was it in New Zealand, in the 1950s? I used to contribute to WHEELS, I think they are out of print. We don't get Australian magazines on the newsstands here in the U.S., never did, compared to the British magazines like Motorsport, Car, T & CC, Classic Car, etc. What would be the equiv. of Road & Track in the U.S., a car magazine dealing with sports cars? Or don't they have a classic car magazine today, the equiv. of Thoroughbred & Classic Car?
Somewhere on this forum was a video of Ken Miles racing a 427 Cobra CSX3002 at Lakeside in 1965. (I tried to pull it up but the link no longer works) I think he DNF'd but it's too bad he didn't have more parts and mechanical support to carry the Shelby American flag. Are there good still pictures of the car as it raced that day? I think it was blue with a white stripe. On another Ford subject concerning Australia, did anyone ever hear of the Mach 2 Ford show car rally car that supposedly Alan Moffat had something to do with (maybe building a rally verson?) Here's the street version 1967 Ford Mach 2 - Концепты I find it hard to believe because the thing was built on a '67 Mustang floor pan which I think would be way too weak to base a race car on but maybe he beefed it up. I don't think I've ever read of it running in rallies? Or do I have my prototypes mixed up? |
Barry N. On site here may be able to add some details.
Barry was Moffatts mechanic and builder for a while. He also worked on the Gt40 race cars in the US as well. Will keep looking for information. |

I have decided to head to Pomona Fairplex and the NHRA museum for the 50th year Shelby reunion, but have now moved that forward one day to be at the complex for the competition track day. Cheers Bernie |
Here you go Historybuff,
Ron Thorpe and Ken Miles raced a couple of original CSX's back in the mid 60's. I have found some old photos which might help. Ron Thorpes was an original AC Cobra 289ci which he purchased on 19th November, 1964 from AC in England. Its ID is COB 6033. It was on auction in Sydney back in 2004 for around $400K, but I don't know what happened to it after that. Ken Miles Cobra on the otherhand was a 427ci with ID CSX3002.
