How do these work? Seems that some need a simcard and therefore some kind of contract or regular updating payment to the card issuer. Are there other types?

That's right Merv. Prepaid sim card. Still very cheap insurance if you ask me. If only to watch the scumbag being led away.

Merv, fyi, a 12 month pre-paid sim from Telstra costs $60, inserted into a hidden GPS tracker (about $300) means you can obtain its location using your mobile with just an sms.

Friend in Sydney fitted one to his car trailer just before I left
He ran it of a small alarm battery
I think it sends u signal to ye phone when it's out of a designated area
And also if u see it missing u send it a signal
It sends u a signal back with co ordinates
Then u punch the co ordinates in google maps and it comes up

Thanks for that. I was thinking you would need to re-charge that sim every month, but I guess it really isn't doing much and if there are 12 month cards ...
Also the batteries on the device itself would need to be good enough to last for a while at least. Some of them seem to last for 2 weeks only on trackers.
Has anyone actually fitted one of these and could it be used to disable, say, a fuel pump power feed?

Yes it can disable fuel pump or whatever you like, mine disables the ecu on command. If you have a smart phone you can watch live tracking on a map. You just run it off the car battery so no need to re charge battery. All very James bond. lots of building companies use them now and put them in kitchen appliances when they are delivered, it's amazing where they turn up.
Plenty of nice cars going missing in Perth, they just follow you home kick the front door in and take the keys. The tilt tray is an old trick as most people don't take any notice it is so blatant.

Sounds good. Which model did you use?

It has no brand name, it came from China and is similar to the link above. Around $80 delivered. Use a cheap plan sim. Have a look on flea bay. Very easy to install.

Just the ticket for finding your car in the shopping center car park. Now where the F#% did I park it?

Mike, the new generation parking guidance systems will do that for you. We have just installed the new camera based system here at Canberra Airport.
Rather than use Infrared sensors above each bay, which often give a false vacancy, these use 4 cameras in each housing mounted in the aisle focused on each bay. So like the Tollway number plate readers they have the ability to gather all sorts of info, including your plate, then your parking position can be looked up at a kiosk or an app on your phone.

Merv,
I've had a GPS tracker fitted for about 2 years. I use a Savvytel SIM card, these prepaids never expire. I topped it up with $20 when I purachased it and it's still going strong with about $15 left.

Sadly mine has not left the shed for 2 years. I have however on occasion struggled to find my daily driver at some of these monster shopping center car parks. :o
