New fuel tank
Hi Guys,
I am planning on building an aluminium drop fuel tank and was was wondering if any body had any suggestions on:- What dimensions the tank should be. How litres of fuel do you think a good size tank should hold. Internal or external fuel pump. Should the tank be baffled. An the moment its easy to do because the body is of the car being painted, so if I need to weld brackets etc nows the time. Thanks Rod |

Definitely go internal pump if you can to cut down on noise and simplify the delivery systems. Tank must be baffled too elsewise surge will be a right pain in the asterisk for you at low fuel levels. A well built tank can set up the pump in a mini sump within the tank ie lowest point and if you use a proprietary pump say from large Ford or Holden you'll have sufficient delivery to power your car unless you start hotting it up significantly. Think I've got a BF 260 fuel pod so it has the strainer, pump and level sensor all build in as one item, so for me a 5.4 V8 pump arrangement fuelling a 5L motor. Also makes use of the standard Ford electrical connectors so simplifies the wiring too! Slo |

Gav are you still running the standard commodore tank ?
Steve I hadn't thought about the noise issue from an external pump. Mike how many litres will your tank hold ? Gav two other questions have you upgraded your brakes or done anything with the rear end along the lines of what Mike has done. I thinking whilst its in bits whether I should bite the bullet and do some upgrades. Rod |
This is mine. Stainless steel, about 90L. I have polished it since the photos, but you get the idea.

I have a standard VN tank with a 6ltr in tank pump, I do however have surging issues when it gets below 1/2 tank. I am in the process of fitting a swirl pot with an external Aeromotive pump. I like the factory looking tank, and plan to keep it. My brakes have been upgraded to territory on the rear and I have made my own conversion to AP calipers with one piece 325?mm rotors up front. A bias adjuster is good too, allows quick adjustment during at any time. The brakes are great now. |
if u have an ls1 like in your info
then get a vy or vz fuel pump assembly and fit this to tank during design that way u have pump and pressure reg all in one have u bought yr fuel gauge yet cause u might be able to get one to suit the fuel pumnp assembly that u get just beware early vy vx and vt have 80 to 240 ohms and late vy vz have 240 to 80 ohms they reversed the ohms for some reason i dont know y but one of those should match an aftermarket fuel gauge then u dont have to add another sender unit for the fuel gauge |

I also have the standard Holden in tank fuel pump. They are adjustable, quiet, no need for regs and return lines, but mine does suffer like Gav's when the tank gets below 1/2 but only on the track, no worries on the road. I think 70 litres is heaps, you still want to have a boot for the slabs :LOL: STIFFY |
