What are the best shocks
Hi guys
The body is of being painted and the rest of the car is now in more bits than it has ever been, so I am taking advantage of this and doing some up grades. I currently have Avo coil shocks and was thinking about up grading but to what does anybody have any suggestions, I have already upgraded the springs. I also have the rear end in bits and are going to change over all the bushes but again any suggestions on what's best. Thanks Rod |
Do you have the newer round-tube chassis or the older chassis with Jag front-end?
|
A few of us have gone the QA1 route http://www.clubcobra.com/forums/aust...absorbers.html
I would never again get AVOs after having leaks in three of them and then leaks in one after repair. The QA1s are excellent in my experience. |
Ben,
Mine is the square tube chassis same vintage as Dave and Mikes. Ben I must try and catch with you and have a look at the difference between the 2 chassis, I live in Beaumaris and car is bits in my factory in Braeside. Merv, Did you get your shocks repaired locally? I can't even find an agent in Australia for them. Rod |
From what I know, the Koni's are the best.
|
Rod I am just in Cheltenham, would be great to catch up.
I'm going with Penske. |
Penske / Bilstein / Koni, take your pick!
Regards. |
Rod, the AVOs were re-valved in Wacol Brisbane. Your choices have a lot to do with the use you be putting them to on road and/or track. Double adjustable is good, but not essential. Some are very expensive and you pay a premium for their name. How they connect to the suspension is also important. My AVOs were connected by polly bushes and that lasted no time at all.

Hi Roda,
I have the later round tube chassis as well, i have the QA1 shocks and springs. I don't know how they perform yet, but i am happy with the fit and finish of them. I fitted all my suspension bushes out with Superpro by Fulcrum Suspensions, the bushes are actually made by Mackay Rubber and available as Sure-Trak brand, Fulcrum are much easier to deal with and available through Bursons and Supercheap, they are less flexible than OE, but they are not as hard and harsh as the Nolathane brand. Why has no one said ALDAN? Great great product!! IMHO...
|
Murray Coote @ Landsborough on the Sunshine Coast does a hand made job, but I think they are around the $1500 mark...... Each! Used by a lot of racers / rally guys. Probably a bit much for a street car. I have heard Glenn Seton does a similar job on the Gold Coast but a bit cheaper...
|
I have spoken with Murray and he is top drawer, as is his price, and pretty much wasted on a Cobra.

Hi Rod
QA1 good allrounder I went with the adjustable comp and rebound and it works well on road or track. Regards LJ |
Ohlins, JRZ,Moton,Motion Control, Penske (all pretty close)
Do not compare a QA1 to any of the above. NOT in the same league ;) |
What ever a Kirkham uses.::cool:
|
Basically the more you pay, the better the performance. I've personally never liked AVO's, have not had a good experience with them and they are not a good looking shock either.

Penske ajustable.
|
Best bang for the buck will be the QA1. No need to get the double adjustable either unless it's a track car. The single adjustables do adjust both compression and rebound just not independently.
|
I have AVO's, and they are crap.
They are cheap and they leak, I have had all mine rebuilt and they all leaking again, some more than the others. Definitly spend the extra and buy double adjustables in what ever other brand you buy. |

I'll add to the Penske recommendation, they're brilliant on my Kirkham. In spite of having solid rose-joints everywhere, the car is amazingly compliant and comfortable and much of that must be down to the superb Penskes. Paul |
