Gordon... Thanks for the heads-up I will be looking for some tyres in the near future. You are on the very small list.

Hey Legless
Can you rate those Avons against some other tyres in terms of grip to give us an idea of their worth.
I too had heard they were the best choice in terms of 15" tyres for grip but cough cough chickened out when it came to shelling out the moola!
Once I get the car back on the road for a time I might revisit the decision though.
Can you rate their grip please!
Cheers and thanks

Hi Slowy,
Unfortunately I can only rate them against my very limited experiences on the track. When I bought the car it had BFG T/A on the rear and Bridgestone Potenza on the front. I then tried M/T Street radials (scary through puddles, but hooked up really well in the dry, but probably not enough wall strength for sprints). I then had the misfortune to get hold of some very old but new Falken Azenis.
Now all these tyres with the exception of the Avons were not new so its not really a fair comparison but the Avons are so, so much better that you really cant compare them to the first batch. They look pretty ordinary, but the car finished first in the drags and the go to whoa in its class at our first nationals outing. So they obviously hook up really well. Also a little light rain during the event didn't seem to effect the grip.
In my humble opinion they are a great all round tyre for a cobra. I've got nothing bad to say against them except our front tyres got pretty chewed up in the nationals with the edges of the outside lines of tread appearing to melt. I suspect this is due to running a mini spooled diff in the sprints and hill climb but am not sure. Seeing that the diff is now stuffed we're rectifying that with a True Trac.
cheers
Legless

Horses for courses Spook.
If I had the choice of driving to Sydney and back in Ash's or Wayne's car as against this A4, I know which I'd pick. There's no comparison between a nicely worked road car that doubles as a fun track-day car, and an all-out gutted sports sedan.
But I know what you're saying, and high 57s around WP ain't hanging about.
No pressure but I wonder who's going to be the first of our lot to crack the minute? You? Scotty? Ash? Wayne? One of the BDR cars? And while I'm musing (and here comes that horses for courses thing again) has anyone bought Gary Walther's car yet? I can think of half a dozen guys I'd love to see taking that missile around WP or Morgan Pk. It has to stay in Qld doesn't it?

Wp
Hey Don,
Yep, it was just to highlight what the fully fledged HUGE $ race cars are doing. Time, $'s and practice will all make you faster.
In talking to Sam from WP, he's mighty impressed with what all the cobra guys are doing down there....
That said, a sub 1m time won't be me! I lack the canastas, $'s, desire and most importantly "talent" factor required.
Personally, without the cars safety aspects improving I wouldn't want to see anyone going any faster.
Gary's car is an awesome car and there are quite a few QLD's who'd considered it. But I believe there was a very interested party from Melbourne last I heard at the Nats if you believe the talk in the paddock.

This might run sub 1m. Sorry for the Backdraft self promotion. Runs 12 inch wide front slicks and 14 inch wide rears.
Its about 100 feet wide!

Not having to lift for the corners would certainly help.....keep the power on and put it in the right spots for each corner, and the 57's will happen......great looking race car.

Going home tomorrow, but will be weak for a couple of weeks.
Member of the zipper club now.....wouldn't wish the last week on my worst enemy.....
Today I got 100 percent pass on all of the new bits they've sewed into my heart.
I will be making part of my daily jobs for the next couple of weeks, to make a pest of myself on the forum....
Cheers to you all,
