Motec
Hi Guys,
My name is Linden and I just purchased an unfinished but registered detype cobra in NSW. The car was originally built by a guy named Brad Angel in the central coast area.
It has a 302 in it with 8 throttle bodies and motec ecu but the ecu has never been tuned to the setup. It starts and drives but doesn't rev hard or high. Does any one know how to tune them? I'm not wanting to squeeze every horsepower out of it, just need it running smoothly.
Thanks

Hi Linden,
What ECU do you have?
I have a 300 page manual dated April 99, that might be some help.

Not sure what model motec it is. Will need to get under the dash and have a look. I assume it must have been tuned before the new intake was installed as it starts and runs. But won't rev hard and backfires when under a bit of throttle.

Congrats on finding a car Linden. I know Motec tuners in SEQ, but you're in NSW aren't you?
A Motec start file isn't going to help you, because it sounds like it does that just fine.
Is there a data logging download port/cable? It would be interesting to see if there are any error codes when the engine lays over higher in the rpm.
You might find that a lot of the dialling in of your setup might actually be spent on the throttle bodies themselves. I've seen some very talented engine guys chase vacuum leaks and sync issues for ages with 8xthrottle bodies. When they're dialled in though, they look and sound incredible!
(It would be great if you could start a new thread with some pictures of the car!)

Yeh I am in NSW. There is a data cable dangling from under the dash which I assume coming from the ECU.
I've found the phone number from the original owner so will call him tomorrow to see if I can find out some more information about it all.
When I get it out this weekend I'll take some pics and start a new thread.

The motecs apparently have an auto tune function. Has any one had experience with using that?

Congrats and welcome.
Motec are a good piece of kit.
They have their own forum too on their website where motec staff log on and do assist.
www.motec.com • Index page
You'll surely find answers there.
Furthermore they do offer training and tutorials...
Best wishes and do post pics of your new ride!

Not all motec systems have the learn function and then if they do it has to be turned on and have the right sensors to learn, you also need to have the correct base file loaded as well as correct references for crank angle set up as well as a bunch of other stuff. You need to know what ecu you have, there should be a model number on it which will start with "M" once you have that then you can start with base files etc. If it's an old computer it may need a firm ware update before you can talk to it with the current software. Unless you have some experience and the correct equipment I would just find someone to take it too that deals with Motec.

Help may be available from company in Australia in the form of throttle sync tool and more efi tuning help . You have to get all throttle body's in sync. In my case a chassis dyno was used for tuning, but a lap top in car could be used also. Speed technology products Email info@efihardware.com

Hi Linden,
Don't know where in NSW you are. If the worse comes to the worse and you need professional help, I can recommend Sam's Performance Tuning at Greenacre. He did a Dyno tune on my car. Magic. Also tuned my 6L80E Tiptronic Trans with similar results. Good luck.

Hi Linden,
Interested to learn more about your detype. It's a kit I looked at when I purchased my CR and I was intrigued by the few pics I saw but never got the chance to have a good look at one.
It uses Ford Falcon suspension components doesn't it?
Cheers

Mine is running a falcon rear end and Cortina wishbones up front with falcon stub axles. I'll be pulling it apart shortly as I want to upgrade to QA1 adjustable coilover setup. The springs in it at the moment when you push down on the car it barely moves.

Is it a live axle or the IRS?
Please post up a build thread with some pics. I'm sure many here would be interested.
Cheers

I think that was their demonstrator. I remember the Simmons B45 wheels from the brochure pics.

De-type was built by Peter De Arcy in Queensland I believe. When he closed I believe a former employee took over and built them as a King Cobra. They are known for being wider and longer to accommodate taller drivers.
