What size is your alternator?

Hi all,

When fabricating my engine bay, stupid me forgot about accessories. I am trying to find a small alternator. I have found one that is 4.5" long and 4" diameter but only up to 70amp. Is this enough for ls3 ECU, lights, electronic gauges, and basic stereo set up? I think it should be but don't want to be under powered.

Cheers

70amp would be heaps for a basic Cobra.

Clois Harlan 03-06-2013 06:23 AM

I have a 100 amp now. I first had a 65 amp and that was just not enough. By the way I have a brand new 65 amp alternator if anyone wants it for cheap!

Rebel1 03-06-2013 06:53 AM

Is the problem that you can't fit the standard alternator in the standard location low down on the left hand side?.

Zedn 03-06-2013 12:10 PM

Yes, no room down low. I need to put it up high on the passenger side next to the rocker covers.

Clois, do you have fancy electronics or big stereo set up with amp?

In the GTO I had a slight physical fit issue with the alternator and had to use a smaller ‘F-Body’ one – cheap from US. The other thing is I had to move the aircon compressor to where you’re contemplating now installing the alternator. I’m in Sydney (The Shire) and later today my engine will be removed from my car and you are more than welcome to borrow the alternator to see if it fits and to take the aircon compressor mounts to use as templates to make an alternator mount. Send me a message if you are interested.

Hi Peter,

It will have to be even higher than the AC in that picture. It will be almost directly above the rocker cover (where the coils are).

Thanks for the offer to borrow your alternator. I live on the northern beaches so its a bit far to pick up and drop off. I have made a cardboard alternator based on dimensions i could find on the net. I think i can fit it ok, but its just whether the 70 AMPS will be enough.

I am able to work out the draw of the lights and radio, but don't know how much to allow for LS engine management and fuel pump.

Zedn if you can run the engine for a short while without an alternator, maybe measure the current draw down at the fuel pump using a multimeter? ECU draw would be minimal at a guess. I found voltage drop to be more of a problem for the computer.

I use a 65 amp bobcat alternator it runs engine fan inter cooler fan intercooler pump headlights 8 coils ECU and haligen headlights and AC with no problems. They run around $125.oohttp://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...or_bob_cat.JPG

Hi Bill,

Did you modify the alternator cooling fans to run it backwards like you have?
I had considered doing this, but thought it might not look very good. Looks fine on your set up.

Then you may be interested in this new Holly alternator bracket.:

From memory older Honda engines rotate "backward" compared to most other makes, so maybe look for an older model Civic Alternator to mount reversed?

Backwards? Do you use reverse gear to go forwards?

Im pretty sure that all will charge either way, but from the reading i have done there can be cooling issues with running them backwards as the fan is blowing the other way.

Here is another cheaper bracket:
F-Body LS1 High Mount Alternator Relocation Bracket - Speedway Motors, America's Oldest Speed Shop

Puts the alternator a little lower, more beside the head, than the holly bracket.

Bill E 03-06-2013 05:22 PM

No fan in it industrial quality. I like them because they don't brake

Rebel1 03-06-2013 05:26 PM

And, if you are bent on making your own bracket, this may give you some ideas.:

Thats the style i had in mind. Pretty simple with a bit flat plate and tubing. I saw that in a link on another post you had put up when i searched.

Cheers.

Yep, easy to make but a bit agricultural. The Holly is cheap and looks factory.
That's if it fits because it is 17" from engine center line to outside of alternator.
